Magnetic field

Problem 1. (HR Ch. 29, prob. 20) 2 points

In the figure, part of a long insulated wire carrying

current I is bent into a circular section of radius R.
What is the magnetic field (both magnitude and
direction) at the center of curvature C if the circular
section (a) lies in the plane of the page as shown
and (b) is perpendicular to the plane of the page
after being rotated 90° counterclockwise as
indicated?

Problem 2. (HR Ch. 29, prob. 33) 2 points

The figure shows a cross section of a long thin

ribbon of width ℓ that is carrying a uniformly
distributed total current I into the page. What is the
magnetic field (magnitude and direction) at a point
P in the plane of the ribbon at a distance d from its
edge?

Problem 3. (HR Ch. 29, prob. 47) 2 points

The current density j inside a long, solid, cylindrical wire of radius R is in the direction of the central
axis, and its magnitude varies linearly with radial distance r from the axis according to j = j0 r/R, where
j0 is a constant. Find the magnitude of the magnetic field depending on r in all space (for r < R and
r > R).

Problem 4. (HR Ch. 29, prob. 67) 2 points

Two wires, each of the same length ℓ, are formed into a circle and a square, and each carries current I.
What is the magnetic field at the center of the circle? What is the magnetic field at the center of the
square? Which one is greater?

Problem 5. (HR Ch. 28, prob. 73) 2 points

The figure shows a cross section of a long cylindrical

conductor of radius a containing a long cylindrical
hole of radius b < a/2. The central axes of the cylinder
and hole are parallel and are distance d apart; current I
is uniformly distributed over the tinted area. What is
the magnitude of the magnetic field at the center of the
hole? Discuss the two special cases b = 0 and d = 0.
