Digital Avatar

A woman named Ann, who had been paralyzed

for nearly two decades due to a stroke, has
regained her ability to speak using a
groundbreaking digital avatar developed by a
team of scientists in California. This innovative
technology has the remarkable capability to
translate Ann's brain signals into both speech
and facial expressions, marking a significant
milestone in the field.

Ann's paralysis had left her unable to communicate without the assistance
of a slow letter-selection device operated by head movements, allowing her to
form only 14 words per minute. However, the new system developed by the
California researchers can translate her brain signals into words at a
remarkable speed of nearly 80 words per minute. This breakthrough was
achieved by implanting a paper-thin array of 253 electrodes into the part of
Ann's brain responsible for speech, enabling the system to capture the brain
signals originally intended for her mouth, throat, and facial muscles.
Through training an AI system, Ann's unique brain signals were recognized
and translated into speech and facial expressions by a digital avatar, which
also featured a voice created using AI and a recording of Ann speaking.

While the system is not yet flawless, its accuracy is considered practical for
individuals in similar situations to Ann.
