We flew into Lima last ‘week, and then got a connecting flight to Cuzco. That's the nearest town to Machu Picchu, Cuzco ‘was amazing. Did you know, it's about 3400 metres above sea level? It's also really pretty and the locals all dress the way you see them n postcards - with multi-coloured clothes and hats. Awesome! The guide told us to rest for at least a day to acclimatize. Apparently, because Cuzco is so high up, you can get altitude sickness. He also told us not to run or do too much. That wasn't hard; after such a long flight, we couldn't keep our eyes open! The funny thing is, the locals here walk and do things slowly all the time. | guess, in general, it's not a good idea to do things quickly in Cuzco. The next day we took the Vistadome train to Machu Picchu. The train ride was spectacular. We could look at the landscape from the ‘viewing windows on the walls and, wait for it, the roof of the train! After being so impressed with Cuzco and the train ride, | didn’t think | could see anything better. But Machu Picchu was something else! I's not hard to see why it was hidden for hundreds of years before it was rediscovered in 1911 - it definitely isn’t easy to get to, We spent the day walking about the ruins, and basically enjoying its incredible location - you can see the Andes from there! The next few days we spent travelling from Peru to Venezuela, which is where I'm writing from at the moment. Venezuela is beautiful, too, On Monday, Mum, Dad and | (Lou was too scared ~ typical girl!) went on a helicopter ride over Angel Falls. South America, Part 1| For those of you who flunked geography, Angel Falls are the highest waterfalls in the world! They're 979 metres high! The view took our breath away. Dad says it’s the most exciting thing he's ever done and I'd have to agree. You ook down, and see all the wild water. It makes you feel that you're the first person who has ever seen it. Amazing! It's actually not easy to see the falls in any other way. They're in the middle of the jungle and they're so high that most of the water turns into mist before it reaches the ground! I's the mist ‘that makes it difficult to get close enough to see ‘the falls from the ground. That’s why we did a helicopter tour. We're going to hang around here (Canaima) for another day or so and then, on Friday, we're going to Brazil (Rio de Janeiro). We're going to go on a cruise down the Amazon. Can’t wait! In Rio, ll update my blog so watch this space for ‘more about our trip ... Which of the following do you think the article will be about? a Pirates on the high seas b The history of piracy © Anew form of piracy 2 Read the article quickly to check your predictions from Exercise 1. Would you ever rob a bank, mug someone on the street or shoplift? If your answer is no, then you probably think you are an honest person who is not capable of committing a crime. But, if you have a computer at home, maybe you have already committed one without realising it. What crime have you probably committed? The answer is piracy. When most people think of piracy, they think of pirates on a ship like the Peter Pan character, Captain Hook or Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. Images of skull and crossbones, parrots, a peg leg, a hook, or an eye patch may all come to mind. But in the 21* century, piracy has taken on a new meaning. Piracy on the internet, such as downloading software, songs, movies, or even games without: paying for them, is very common. Software, movie, and music industries lose billions of pounds every year as a result of piracy. But it's not just downloading from the internet that is the problem. Even copying a music CD or a DVD. to keep or give to a friend is actually illegal. PIRACY IN THE 215" CENTURY The wrong side of th It's surprising to hear, as most of us at some point in our lives have done one of these things. But is it so serious that it should be considered a crime? We asked a number of people on the street what they thought. Here’s what they had to say: Ian Smith, a 15-year-old high school student, says, ‘Am I really guilty of a criminal act? I only recently started downloading from the internet. T found out that a lot of my classmates had been downloading stuff for free for ages. So now I do, too. It’s just like file sharing, {sn't it? It’s brilliant that there are so many free forms of entertainment available on the internet. I don't get much pocket money. It's hard to imagine something so normal being wrong: Tricia Green, a 19-year-old university student thinks it's a necessity, ‘T definitely couldn't pay for all the software I need; it's really pricey and as a student, I can't afford it. I think it's a good thing; especially for people like me - the average person who doesn't have loads to spend on computer software. Pete Robinson, a 24-year-old shop assistant says, ‘On my salary, I could not afford to buy all the music and see all the films I'd like to see. I download movies, which I later watch with my friends. It's a great opportunity to entertain ourselves on very little money. There is no doubt that the 21% century has brought a media and electronic revolution. The technology we use to copy CDs and DVDs and to download things from the internet is a very new thing. Our taws are having trouble keeping up with all the issues and problems that all this free information is causing. With so many people doing it, piracy over the internet may be impossible to stop. So, the question is, do we allow people to take advantage of all the free software and entertainment or da we spend billions trying to stop it? 3 Read the article again and choose the correct answer. 41 What do most people think of when they think of piracy? a character from a book or film b a person who commits a crime ¢ a person like you or me da person who downloads free songs from the internet 2 Which of the following is not piracy? a copying a CD b downloading a computer game without paying for it ¢ downloading a free sample of a game d copying a DVD 3 Tan Smith believes that ... a sharing files on the internet is legal. b he is doing something wrong but he can’t help himself. ¢ something that everybody does can't he wrong. 4 doing something illegal is not a bad thing. 4 Tricia Green and Pete Robinson say that a they enjoy doing what they do. b movies, songs and software are too expensive for them to buy. ¢ free entertainment is better than entertainment you have to pay for 4 they know they are doing something illegal. 5 The police are having problems stopping piracy because ... a there are too many people to arrest. b there is no law against it ¢ they don’t have enough money to do it. 4 things are changing very fast and new problems keep appearing.
