The Depression Debate

Introduction

Mental health is a sensitive subject that is yet to be given equal attention as that

channeled to physical illness. Society is yet to be educated regarding mental illness and how it

can negatively affect an individual's life (Brouwers, 2019). Most mental health diseases have

minimal physical symptoms and thus have minimal concentration on how bad they can affect the

victim. Most people with mental health issues are stigmatized by society; thus, very few people

are ready for the discussion. Such mental health patients are considered to have low lifetime

value and are dangerous to themselves and other members. However, addressing mental health in

society will ensure that the members have been taught about different illnesses and how they

manifest. Society should be encouraged to address mental health instead of brushing it away.

Therefore, the debate examines how society has not played a role in perpetuating mental illness.

Society has not played a role in perpetuating mental illness because it is not a matter that

is publicly discussed. Society cannot perpetuate a matter they barely know information about

(Misra & Mohanty, 2019). For an extended period, mental health patients have remained silent

because of the possible stigmatization and prejudice that would be experienced. "Often, people

avoid or delay seeking treatment due to concerns about being treated differently or fears of

losing their jobs and livelihood (Chatmon, 2020)." The society contributes to mental health

silence because the victims are judged and sometimes excommunicated. Furthermore, most

societies have no facilities for mentally ill patients; thus, it cannot be addressed as a serious

issue. However, mental health affects many people and contributes to rapidly rising mortality

rates, especially because of suicide.

Conclusion
3

Society should perpetuate mental health awareness, especially because of how most

people are affected in the present day. The modern-day ignorance that has been waged on mental

illness should be eliminated. The future generation should be part of a society that acknowledges

that psychological disorders deserve equal attention and treatment. Society has a huge impact on

people, and it can positively incorporate that power to ensure that mental illness is a subject that

is openly discussed. The affected patients should have a space to express the challenges

experienced when dealing with mental illness, and a collective solution should be developed

where proper treatment is administered. Factors like stigma should be eliminated on mental

health patients to ensure that they contribute to giving lessons regarding psychological illness

and other essential details in society.
