DASHA and TRANSIT

DASHA SYSTEM
Meaning of Dasha:
In astrology Dasha means major time period of planets.
It’s a tool to identify the time of the main planetary period during
which an event either good or bad is indicated in a Horoscope. The
events are predicted on the bases of the strength and weakness of
the planets having their Dasha ,Antar dasha operating at that
particular point of time.
Utility of Dasha System:
1. Dasha reflect the effects that various planets have on any individual
life.
2. To understand the auspicious or inauspicious events of an
individual, or the environments.
Various Dashas Mentioned as per Parashara.
As per BPHS there are 42 types of Dashas. They are
1. Vimshottari Dasha 14. KalaChakra
2. Shodashottari Dasha 15. Sudharshan Chakra
3. Dvadashottari Dasha 16. Chara Paryaya

Various Dashas as per Jaimini:
1. In Jaimini there are 44 dashas and out of which only three are most important and used for
timing of events.
2. In Jaimini the Dashas are based on the Rashi but not based on Planets and Nakshatras.
The Important Dashas are:
1. Char Dasha
2. Sthir Dasha
3. Mandook Dasha
4. CaranaVamsha Dasha
5. Drig Dasha
6. Atma karaka Dasha
7. Upakaaraka Graha Dasha
8. Padma Nath Amsha Dasha
9. Rudra Mandooka Dasha
10. Navamsha Dasha
11. Kala chakra Dasha
Meaning of Vimshottari:
Vimshottari is Vim (20) + Shottari (100) ie., 120 years of Human existence.
Rationale of Vimshottari Dasha in Kaliyug:
Satya Yuga:- Average human lifespan was 100,000 years. - Dharma, Artha, Kaama, Moksha Prevailed
Treta Yuga: – Average human lifespan was 10,000 years. Dharma , Ardha , Moksha
Dwapar Yuga: – Average human lifespan was 1000 years.- Ardha , Kaama
Kali Yuga: – Average human lifespan will be 100 years, and will continue to decrease as we run
through Kali Yuga. – Only Ardha

Now you may wonder, what is the reason of this deterioration?

The primary reason is corrupt nature that prevails and wins in Kali. Everything you see around you is
corrupt. Men are corrupt, systems are corrupt, food is polluted, water is polluted, every single thing
that exists in Kali Yuga is not pure. This includes human hearts, thoughts, desires, values
The Best Dasha:
Vimsottari dasa is the greatest gift of the Maharishi’s for the welfare of people in Dark Age
of Kali especially since the maximum longevity of man during this Dark Age is 120 years
(Vimsottari means 120 which is the maximum period of the Vimsottari Dasa scheme).
Parasara suggested that this is the best of the Nakshatra dasa (and perhaps the best for all
purposes). Thus, our first natural choice is Vimsottari Dasa unless other special conditions
of at birth prevail.

Rishi Parasara in BPHS (chapter 46) states that amongst all Dashas , Vimshottari is the
most appropriate for the general populace.

दशाबहुविधास्तासु मुख्या वििं शोत्तरी मता ।

In Kaliyuga the natural life span of Human being is generally taken as 120 years and so
Vimshottari Dasha is most appropriate.

वििं शोत्तरशतिं पूर्णमायुुः पूिणमुदाहृतम् ।

कलै वििं शोत्तरी तस्माद् दशा मुख्या विजोत्तम ॥ १४॥
Role of Janma Nakshatra in Vimshottari Dasha:

The way Zodaic (Complete sky is divided in to 12 signs, the Zodaic is also divided into 27 constellations
and named as constellation of stars or Naksha= Map and Tara = Star, together forming constellation.
Moon covering equally all stars in a month and 2.25 Nakshatras coming under each Zodaic sign.
Dashas are generally nakshatra based. That is to say ,they depend upon the birth nakshatra or the
nakshatra of Moon at the time of birth.
The 27 nakshatras are divided into 3 groups of nine nakshtra each . These are owned by nine
planets. Each planet is allotted a specific number of years over which it operates.
The order of dasha is fixed.

Order of Vimshottari Dasha:
Depending upon Moon’s nakshatra in the birth chart , the dasha of a particular
planet operates at the time of birth . Subsequent planetary period follow according
to the order – Ketu , Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter Saturn, Mercury.
• The order of subdivision of the Dasha System is known to be in the below
order,
• Vimshottari Maha Dasha> Antardasha> Pratyantar Dasha> Sookshma
Dasha>Pran Dasha
• These parts are the sub divisions of the main Dasha.
Each nakshatra has a span of 13 20’. Or the Suns nakshatra this 13 20’ would mean 6 years.
For Moon’s nakshatra it is 10 years , and so on . The balance of a planet dash thus is
proportionate to the extent of the Moon’s nakshatra which is yet to be elapse.
Five Levels of Vimshottari Dash System.
MD(Level1) AD(Level2) PD(Level3) SD(Level4) PrD(Level5)
Calculation of Vimshottari Dasha Balance at Birth (Remainder)

1. Moon’s Position helps us to calculate the same.

2. Total Zodaic 360° ( 12 Signs, each sign of 30° or 2 ¼ Nak. or 9 padas each pada is of
3⁰20’ ) or 27 Nak, each Nak is of 13°.20’ ( Each star = 4 Padas, One pada =3°20’)
Ex: Assuming Moon is at 14° 04’ Placed in Leo
1. Leo ruled by 3 Stars( 9 Padas) ie., Magha up to 13°20’ ( 4Padas of 3°20’ each ), Purva
Phalguni 13°20’ ( 4 Padas) , Uttara Phalguni 3°20’ ( 1st Pada) total 9 Padas of 3°20’ each.
2. Moon at 14°04’ means it has crossed Magha Total 13°20’ ( 4 Padas) and the remaining 1°
24’ falls under 1st pada of Purva phalguni since the star is up to 26⁰40’ Means Moon Placed
in Purva Phalguni Star.
3. The Lord of P.Phalguni is Venus and So Venus Dasha is running for the native.
4. Dasha Venus runs for 20 years and for this native Moon Placed in Purva Phalguni star has
. So remaining period of P.Phalguni =26⁰40’ -14⁰04’ = 12⁰36’ or 756’
Dash balance at Birth =756 x 20 ÷ 800 = 15120/800= 18.9years or 18Y 10M 24Days.
( each Nak.has an extent of 13⁰20’or 800 minutes.

Calculation of Maha Dasha:
Let us Assume that the DOB is 01.01.1970. Balance Dasha calculated at birth was 18Y 10M 24 days.
Maha Dasha of the Native would be
Assuming Date of Birth of the native 01.01.1970
( As on the date of birth 1Y 1M 6 D have been Completed)
Balance Dasha of Venus 18 Y 10 M 24 D
Venus Dasha of 20 Years ends at 25.11.1988
Next Sun Dasha of 6 Years 25.11.1994
Next Moon Dasha of 10 Years 25.11.2004
Next Mars Dasha of 7 Years 25.11.2011
Next Rahu Dasha of 18 years 25.11. 2029
Next Jupiter Dasha of 16 years 25.11. 2045
Next Saturn Dash of 19 years 25.11.2064
Next Mercury Dasha of 17 Years 25.11.2081
Next Ketu Dasha of 7 Year 25.11.2088
Total 120 years Maha Dasha ends at 25.11.2088
Calculation of AntarDasha Period:
1. Antar Dasha/Pratyntar Dasha/ Sookshma Dasha/ Prana Dasha starts from the Starting Dasha Planet
of MD/AD/PD/SD/PrD. For Example
2. Venus MD starts with AD of Venus and rest sequence as per Dasha System.
3. Venus AD starts with PD of Venus and rest Sequence as per Dasha System.
4. Venus PD starts with SD of Venus and rest sequence as per Dasha System.
5. Venus SD starts with Pr.D of Venus and rest sequence as per Dasha System.
6. All the Planets will have the same sequence of MD/AD/PD/SD/PrD.
7. As maha dasha period can range from 6 years to 20 years for different , it is not possible to arrive at
definite predictive conclusion for timing of event in this large span . Hence we must calculate a
smaller period called Antar dasha or Bhukti.
Calculations:
1. Multiply Maha dasha periods of two planets of which Maha Dasha /Antar Dasha is required.
2.Multiply last digit of the product by 3 to give us days.
3. Remaining figure of the product gives us months
In the Ex: Venus MD is running at the time of birth . So 1st AD will be Venus himself .According to the rule
here MD and AD is Venus and the dasha duration for Venus is 20 years
Now multiply dasha duration of both MD and AD lord =20x20=400
Multiply the last digit of product by 3 = 0x3=0 days , the remaining figure of product is months
Venus/Venus 40 months or 3 years 4 months
Assuming DOB is 01.01.1970

AD of Venus in Venus 20×20 = 400 ie., 40 Months 3 Years 4 months. From this 2Y 2M 24 D 25.03.1972
MD Venus- Venus completed period (20 y – 0 M- 0D)–( 18Y 10 M- 24D)
= 1y 1M 6D; (3Y-4M-0D ) – (1Y- 1M – 6D) =

AD of sun in Venus MD 20×6=120 ie., 12 Months 0 days or 1year 1Y 0 M 0 D 25.03.1973

Venus- Sun

Venus - Moon 20× 10=200 ie., 20 Months or 1year 8 months 1Y 8M 0 D 25.11.1974

Venus - Mars 20×7=140 ie., 14 Months or 1year 2months 1Y 2 M 0 D 25.01.1976

Venus - Rahu 20×18=360 ie., 36 Months or 3years 3 Y 0M 0 D 25.01.1979

Venus - Jupiter 20×16=320 ie., 32 Months or 2years 8 months 2Y 8M 0D 25.09.1981

Venus - Saturn 20×19=380 ie., 38 Months or 3 years 2 months 3Y2M 0D 25.11.1984

Venus - Mercury 20×17=340 ie., 34 Months or 2 years 10months 2Y10M 0D 25.09.1987

Venus - Ketu 20×7=140 ie., 14 Months or 1year 2 months 1Y 2 M 0 D 25.11.1988

Calculation of Pratyantar Dasha period:
This is a further smaller period called patyantar dasha or the sub-sub period .
Multiply the maha dasha period of three planets and divide by 40. This gives
pratyantar dasha in days .
In Ex: Venus MD/ Venus AD/ Venus PD = 20x20x20= 8000÷40= 200 days or 6m 20D
PRATYANTAR DASHA CALCULATION
Venus -Venus - Venus 20x20x20÷40= 200D or 6M 20D 6M 20D
6months 20 days
20x20x6÷40= 60 days or 2M 0D 8M 20D
Venus- Venus - Sun 2 months

Venus - Venus- Mercury 20x20x17÷40= 170 days 5M20D 37M 20D
or5months 20 days
Venus - Venus- Ketu 20x20x7÷40=170 days or 2M10D 40M ie., 3 Years 4 Months
2months 10days
Sookshma Dasha Calculation:
1. Multiply the M.D period of 4 planets and divide by 200 this gives Sookshma Dasha in hours.
Example: Calculate Sookshama Dasha (SD) of Saturn in PD of Jupiter AD of Mercury and M.D of
Venus
Venus/Mercury/Jupiter/Saturn = 20x17x16x19/200= 516.8 hours or 21 days 12hours 48 minutes

Pran Dasha Calculation:

1. Multiply the M.D period of 5 planets and divide by 400. This gives Pran dasha in minutes
Example: Calculate Pran dasha of Moon in SD of Saturn, PD of Rahu AD of Venus in the MD of
Venus
Venus/Venus/Rahu/Saturn/Moon =20x20x18x19x10/400 =3420minutes or 2days and 9hours

Meaning: 1. Each Planet in its Dasha Gives only two types of Results. 1. General 2. Distinctive (either
Good or Bad.
2. Each planet in its dasha effects based on its 1. Natural Characteristics 2. Placement, Position, Aspect etc
3.. Natural characteristics of the planet Causes the General Effects and Placement of the planets causes
Distinctive Results.
4. The effects of the Dasha of the planets are in accordance with their Strength.
5. The effects of a Planet in First Drekkana are realised at the commencement of Dasha and the effects of
2nd Drekkana gives in the Middle of Dasha and Third Drekkana are experienced in the last.
6. Planets in retrograde gives its results in reverse order ie., Last Drekkana during beginning period of
dasha and First Drekkana in the end of the Dasha. Middle remains in the middle Dasha period.
7. The Dash effects of Rahu and ketu being retrograde will always be realised in the reverse order.
Tula Lagna Chart:
1. Jupiter in this Chart is Lord of 3rd and 6th House, and 3rd and 6th are malefic houses
6th 7th Jupiter and hence malefic results are also given with regard to 3rd and 6th house in addition to
the natural benefic karakatwas like Child Birth, Wealth Accumulation. House, Vehicle,
Improvement in Dharma etc.

2. Saturn Lord of 4th and 5th ie., Kendra and Trikona Houses becomes poorna Yogakaari
5th and hence gives benefic results though being malefic planet in addition to its malefic
results like sorrow, grief, accidents nervous system problems, longevity etc. It also gives
the benefic results like House, Vehicle, Children, love, education etc. So though the
planet is malefic, the native gets the benefic results too.

4th 3. Suppose Sa placed in Ascendant and the 2nd Lord Ma also in the same place and Ju
aspecting from Gemini then the planet is treated as having strength and gives result of
poorna yogakaari results.

Saturn

Kalpurush Impact
1. To Look for the Lordship of the houses.
2. To Look for the Nature of the planet Malefic or Benefic.
3. When all the areas are checked like House, Karaka, aspects etc then
the area to be seen for the results in hidden form is Kalpurush.
4. Ex. There is accident during Mangal Dasha but head ache would be
coming and it must be due to Mars being the lord of Aries. So look
for the planet in the Kalpurush chart.
5. Ex. During Moon Dasha and when Moon is giving the residential
house, there is no scope that the house possibility is there. But due
to kalpurush Patrika Moon is kaarak for the 4th house.
Kalpurush Effect
1. Head ache during Mars Dasha is related to the Kalpurush chart
being Mars the lord of 1st House.

2. Despite Moon being in 10th house and not related, the result of
house purchase it must be due to Kalpurush Chart being Moon the
lord of 4th house.
Sun
3. Despite sun being in 11th house but result is birth of Son this must
be due to Kalpurush chart Sun is the 5th Lord.

Moon 4. Varga Chart also to be seen.

Example 1. Aries Ascendant Example 2. Taurus Ascendant Example 3. Gemini Ascendant

Mars 1,8 - 8th Not Evil Venus 1,6 – 6th not Evil Mercury -1,4 -
Venus 2, 7 - Mercury 2, 5 – Venus - 5, 12 – Not Evil
Mercury 3,6 - Evil only Mars 7, 12 Mars 6, 11 - Bad
Jupiter 9, 12 - 12th Not evil Jupiter 8, 11 – Evil Results Jupiter 7, 10 ,
Saturn 10, 11 – Saturn 9, 10 Saturn 8,9 – Not Evil

Note: Coruling applies only to 5 planets because they have two houses, each one odd and one even. Not applicable to
Moon and Sun having only one house.
Co-rulership:

1. Generally it is understood that Moon and Sun will not have the Ashtama dosh. Even other
planets too will not have Ashtama dosh and even other kinds of malefic doshas under following
Circumstances
2. The concept is called Sahacharya Ka Niyam or Coruling.
3. Coruling applies only to 5 planets because they have two houses each, one odd and one even
4. Any planet becoming Lord of 1, 5th , 9th house and also becomes lord of 8H or 6 H or 12 th
house, the malefic nature of the malefic house reduces.
5. Ma being the Lord of 1 and 8 th for Aries Lagna, 1H being Kendra and Trikona and poorna
Yogakari, Ma malefism is reduced despite being 8th.
6. Same way Ju being 9th and 12L for Aries Lagna , malefism of 12th is not being shown.

7. If 6, 8 ,12 Lords become 3,6,11 lords also then those planets tend to give evil results.
8. If 1,5,9 Lords also become the lords of 6,8,12 then the eveil effects will be less.
9. If Coruling one is evil house and other in MT then the evil results would be less.
Planets Behaviour:
1. Lord of the trines (1,5,9 houses) give benefic results irrespective of their inherent nature.
2. Natural benefics as lords of the quadrants (1,4,7,10 houses) lose their beneficence. Natural
malefics as lords of (1,4,7,10 houses) also lose their malefic nature.
3. Lords of the 3rd , 6th 11TH house are always malefic.
4. The lords of the 2nd , 8th and 12th are neutrals. They give results based on their location and
influences on them.
5. Amidst the quadrants, 4th lord is more powerful than lagna, 7th lord is more powerful than 4th
lord, 10th lord is more powerful than seventh lord.
6. Amidst the trines, the fifth lord is more powerful than lagna lord, the ninth lord is more powerful
than the fifth lord.
7. Amidst the 3,6,11 group, the sixth lord is more powerful than the third lord and the eleventh lord
is more powerful than the sixth lord.
8. Amidst the 2,8,12 group, the eighth lord is more powerful than the second lord and the twelfth
lord is more powerful than the eighth lord.
9. The eighth lord, though considered to be neutral, has great propensity to do evil as it is the
twelfth lord from the ninth house (fortune). Therefore, it can cause obstacles, failures, ailments,
death etc.
10.The eighth lord is still more malefic if it is also the lord of the third or the eleventh lord. Like
Venus in Pisces lagna, Mars in Virgo lagna, Jupiter in Taurus lagna and Mercury in Scorpio lagna.
11. The eighth lord becomes a benefic planet when it also owns a trine like Jupiter and Mercury in Leo
and Aquarius lagna. For Gemini lagna, Saturn as lord of the eighth house and the ninth house gives
mixed results.
12. The blemish of the eighth lordship does not apply to the Sun and the Moon. However, practically
this doesn’t hold good. Especially for longevity and other considerations.
13. When a planet owns both a quadrant and the trine, it becomes Rajya-Yoga-Karaka (doer of great
benefit). It becomes especially more effective if such a planet is placed in quadrant or trine.
14. Only the ownership of the quadrant doesn’t make any malefic planet as benefic, the planet should
also own a trine to get rid of its malefic nature completely.
15. The blemish of kendra lordship, as applicable to benefics increases progressively from the Moon,
Mercury, Jupiter and Venus.
16. The Full Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus, in this order, are more powerful as benefics.
17. The Waning Moon, Sun, Saturn and Mars, in this order, are more powerful as malefics.
18. If the lord of a quadrant is in any way related to the lord of the trine, a Rajya yoga is formed. This
can occur by various means like conjunction of the lord of the quadrant with lord of the trine, by mutual
aspect, by placement of lord of quadrant in trine or vice-versa, by exchange of houses (Parivatan Yoga),
when one is placed in other’s house and this latter aspect the former. Planets involved in Rajya yoga
generally give good results.
19. Rahu and Ketu give results based on the house where it is located and according to the planet
whom they join. Rahu and Ketu can give yogakaraka results when they are placed in the quadrant, and
join a trine lord or when they are placed in trine with the lord of the quadrant. Rahu also behaves as
Saturn and Ketu as Mars.
