REV: - 00
PASSIVATION PROCESS DATE: - 19.05.2023

Scope:

The process of passivation, is a post-fabrication acid treatment that removes “free iron”
contamination left behind on the surface of the stainless steel from machining, forming and
fabricating.

Responsibility:

Production In charge/ Quality

APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR ACID CLEANING

1. Removed burr from steel
2. Used Acid 15-20% by vol. (HNO3)
3. Immersion time required 10-15 minutes
4. Temperature of bath 30-40ׄc.
5. Then fresh water rinsing and dry.
6. Then Neutralization Treatment.
7. Then fresh water rinsing and dry.

Inspection After Cleaning

Visual: Items cleaned in accordance with this practice should be free of paint, oil, grease, welding
flux, slag, heat-treating and hot-forming scale (tightly adherent scale resulting from welding may be
permissible on some surfaces), dirt, trash, metal and abrasive particles and chips, and other gross
contamination. Some deposited atmospheric dust will normally be present on exterior surfaces but
should not be present on interior surfaces. Visual inspection should be carried out under a lighting
level, including both general and supplementary lighting, of at least 1080 lx [100 footcandles], and
preferably 2700 lx [250 footcandles] on the surfaces being inspected.

FERROXYL TEST: Apply the solution with a spray atomizer made of plastic, rubber, glass, or
aluminum. Be certain that the atomizer contains no iron parts. The presence of iron will be indicated
by the solution turning to a dark blue colour. If dark blue areas develop within 30seconds after the
solution has wetted the surface, the test is considered positive and the contaminated areas must be
cleaned and retested. Unless otherwise stated, it is required that 100 percent of the area show a
negative reaction in this test. In either case, wash immediately to prevent blue stains from appearing
on the surface. Caution: Dark areas may appear after 30seconds and these results may be
misinterpreted.
Testing Solution
Distilled water 94% by wt.
Potassium ferricyanide 3% by wt.
Nitric acid (60-67℃) 3% by wt.
