A similar classification applies to all building hardware product standards so that complementary items of hardware can be specifi to, for instance, 2 common level of corrosion resistance, category of Use, ote. Each digit reters to. particular feature of the product measured against the standard’s pertormance requirements. Digit -Category of use Four categories of use are identified: ~ grade 1: ight duty + grade 2: meaum aury ~ grade 3: heavy duty - grado 4: sovaro duty Digit 2~ Durability “Three grades are identified for single-axis hinges manufactured to this European standard: + grade 3: 10 000 test cycles, for light duty hinges on windows only + grade 4:25 000 test cycles, for light duly hinges on windows and doors, ~ grade 7: 200 000 teat eysleo, for medium. The majority of situations are straightiorward and present few problems, however it is important ‘that specifiers recognise where special cate is required to ensure Jong and trouble tree operation. Hecause ot the wide vanety of Circumstances tha exist itis impossible to be prescriptive, however ‘the following is intended to draw attention to some of the potential problem areas and explain some of theprinciples involved. Factors to consider when specitying hinges «= Isitatire, smoke oremeraency escape door? ‘+ How heavyisthe door and whataare the door dimensions (height, width and thickness)? ‘¢ What's the door's construction and are there any unusual features, thotoouldatfoottho hingoo? ‘= Where is tha door situated eg. internal or external: Is it near the coastorinaswimming pool? ‘= What level of use/abuse will the door be subject to e.g. office, hhospitalor school corridor? ‘+ What other items of hardware are to be fitted, that ma hinge performance, typically door closers or door stops‘ ++ Any other unusual features involved eg. door has radius top or the doorisa bifold, affect the Forces operating on a door ‘Thora are two main forces that the hingo has to cope with. The ‘vertical load; and, as hinged doors are side-hung, the horizontal or lateralioad. “Tho wortiealioas ica cioetrecult ofthe grose deer weight. Tho horizontal loadis created by: ‘The door weight The door heighttowidth ratio Where thehinges are positioned, ‘The wider the doors in relation toits height, the greater the side load that the hinges and thai ixings have fo support. Locating the hinges {tis usual for at least three hinges to be fitted on doors; their positioning is dotermined by the size, woight and construction of General guidelines “Top and bottom hinges must be as far apart as reasonable, tomaximise their ability to cope with side load. Consider any otner factors that wil increase the loadings of hinges anatmerrings. ‘Adgitional ringes are needed for tal doors, to prevent warping (doors taller than 2200mm should be fitted with four hinges).
