If we can remove the water vapour which may be mixed with the gas, then
the gas is dry.
This is done by the use of a drying agent.
1. Gases that do not react with acids such as CO, SO may be dried by
passing them through concentrated sulfuric acid (drying agent).
(Question)
Which of the following arrangements for drying a gas with concentrated acid
is correct ?
gasin ry gas out dry gas out
concentrated concentrated
sulfuric acid sulfuric acid
2. Ammonia gas is dried by passing it over solid calcium oxide or silica gel
[drying agents}
> [Concentrated sulfuric acid cannot be used because it reacts with
ammonia gas.]
ammonia + sulfuric acid ———> ammonium sulfate
