Assignment 1 29/11/2023 Xu Changhao A1820802

Goals and Objectives:

This study aimed to deepen our understanding of the epidemiology and control of
schistosomiasis in Africa through the application of remote sensing (RS) technology and
geographic information systems (GIS).

Data used in the study:

The research relies on a variety of data types, including:
Environmental data: Remotely sensed environmental data such as surface temperature, rainfall,
normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and other climate-related variables.
Geospatial data: Use digital ground maps and digital elevation models to build an integrated GIS
to facilitate mapping and analysis of the spatial distribution of infections.
Distribution data of intermediate host snails: Recognizing the importance of snail species in
schistosomiasis transmission, distribution maps were used for model refinement.

Research methods:
This study integrated RS, GIS and spatial analysis techniques to study the epidemiology of
schistosomiasis. The method involves:
RS: Leveraging satellite imaging sensor technology to collect environmentally relevant data
critical to understanding the epidemiology of schistosomiasis.
GIS: Used for exploratory analysis of disease epidemiology, helping to study associations
between location, disease, vectors/intermediate hosts, and environment.

Finding and Summary

GIS and RS techniques to identify high-risk areas to prioritize control interventions in national
schistosomiasis control programs. and The role of socioeconomic and demographic factors in
explaining spatial heterogeneity in schistosomiasis transmission, emphasizing factors such as
sanitation and safe water supplies at the local scale.
