WEEK-7: QUESTIONS

Question 1:
Explain with a diagram the load experienced by the rigid tunnel support as opposed
to flexible tunnel support.

Question 2:
List different methods of estimation of load onto the tunnel. Which method would
yield less load and why?

Question 3:
Explain the ‘Support Confinement Curve and EIP’ with a diagram.

Question 4:
(i) Calculate vertical stress acting on the tunnel lining considering K0=0.8, unit
weight=20kN/m3, t=10cm concrete ring has compressive strength of
fy=35MPa
(ii) Check if a minimum FOS of 2 is attained for a smaller thickness of t=5cm and
(iii) Calculate the maximum deflection of the tunnel lining u (based on the SCC)
assume concrete modulus of 20GPa.
Question 5:

Suppose that the following settlement data (at the centre line) have been recorded
by settlement points after the tunnel was driven.

Estimate the composition of ground losses. Assume a tunnel lining thickness, t=

100 mm and concrete elasticity modulus of 20GPa

Discuss briefly of a method of ground control improvement that can be used to

minimize ground losses.
