July 1914 – The Serbian campaign

-Austrian Army
-Consisted of around 2.5 million men
-Most were issued with the Gewehr.M95
-Many were illiterate, and consisted of men
speaking a multitude of languages, including
German, Czech and Polish
-3 armies were envisioned to be used in the
invasion of Serbia, but the 2nd Army was
diverted to the Russian front
-In total around 500 000 Austrian men were
deployed in the invasion of Serbia

-Overall, Austro-Hungarian troops were of


poor quality, and most were not well trained

-Many maintained the view that this war would


be a rite of passage, or some great adventure
The Campaign
• The day after Austria declared war on Serbia, they shelled the
city of Belgrade with artillery.
• General Potiorek moved half his forces from the 5th and 2nd
armies into Northern Serbia
• They were repelled after 4 day long battle of Cer
• The Serbian military moved into Syrmia across the Sava river.
Their objective was to catch the 2nd army on the move, but found
that they had already left. They suffered around 6000 casualties
during the operation, and only inflicted around 2000
• Potiorek decided to launch another assault into Serbia, across
the Drina region on the 6th of September
• Initially, the Serbs managed to defend, but Marshall Putnik
ordered a retreat into defensive positions after suffering losses of
around 11 000 after 4 days.
• Serbian losses reached up to 100 per day in trenches.
• On the 5th of November, Potiorek launched an attack into
Kolubara. The Serbs were slowly pushed back, taking heavy
casualties.
• The Austro-Hungarians took the capital city of Belgrade on the
2nd of December after Putnik abandoned the city
• At this point, supplies had arrived from France, and Putnik ordered an attack on Belgrade. They crushed the
6th Army, and overwhelmed the 5th Army
• Potiorek ordered a retreat across the river, leaving Belgrade to the Serbians
• Having both suffered heavy casualties, the first phase of the war concluded with no change to the Serbian or
Asutro-Hungarian border.
