the present days Stress

Abstract- In view of the changing concepts of health and diseases and with the emergence of
modern health hazards, attention has been drawn to the holistic concept of Indian Medicine like
Ayurveda and Yoga. In the present scenario stress is a very common psychological issue and a
major cause of various psychosomatic disorders. Meditation is a very good tool to control our
mind and thoughts. Twin hearts meditation is a Chakral meditation technique other than mindful
meditation techniques.
Master Choa, a resident of the Philippines and a holder of chemical engineering degree
and a successful industrialist and spiritual guru, duly outlined some of the principles and clarified
that our yoga is a very advanced and systematic way of living, not just a way of living. In his
book the ancient art and science of Pranichealing he wrote thatTwin Heart Meditation is helpful
to improve positive thinking & human relationship which results in increase of the auric
frequency. Meditation on twin Hearts is based on the principle that some of the major chakras are
entry points to certain levels or horizons of consciousness.

Introduction- Present days, Hi tech social media and communication facilities, rapid
industrialization, sophisticated life style and extensive use of computers are mixed blessing one
hand they have made lives much easier but on the other hand they are blamed for making the life
stressed along with the above, competitive lifestyle, showoff nature and most important fearful
condition due to life threatening risk by Covid pandemic increases the stressed environment.1 (K
and Shivaram)
Stress and its consequences - The stress has become an inseparable parts of life of human beings.
The stress is a great challenge to the mind & body. Stress is a product of dissatisfaction, frustration
& leads to psychosomatic disorders. Stress and health are closely linked. It is estimated that 80%
of all modern diseases have their origin due to stress. Constant exposure to stress leads to psycho-
somatic disorders affecting immune, cardiovascular and nervous systems. The diseases linked to
stress include cardiovascular disease, respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases, allergies,
hypertension, diabetes and even cancer.2(Khurana and Khurana).

Our present Education system unfortunately tends to over emphasize the development of
the mental abilities only. The development of the virtue has been neglected, Because of these
person becomes intelligent & successful but his human relationship may be very poor
3(Nikhra).This is one of the main causes of spreading stress in our day to day life. Current studies
characterize emotion as a complex phenomenon arising from responses to external and internal
stimulus (mental representations) of the individual 4(Barrett et al.) .
For a better understanding of how the phenomenon of emotion occurs, have organized a
scheme that explains emotional processing. This scheme, denominated modal model, was
elaborated in order to unite the convergent points among several researchers about emotion topic
and can be divided into four stages, which are: (1) Situation; (2) Attention; (3) Evaluation; and
(4) Response.5 (Gross and Thompson #)(2006)
From a practical point of view, there is a concern to study the effects of emotion
regulation on people’s daily lives and, consequently, the importance of this cognitive function
depend on emotional well-being6(Brockman et al.). Studies on this topic have already shown their
great relevance to the clinical context. According to the review elaborated by7(Berking and
Wupperman), the misuse of strategies of emotion regulation is positively related to
neuropsychiatric disorders, such as: borderline personality disorder 8(Schulze et al.); depression
9(Ehring et al.); anxiety disorder 10(Cisler et al.); and substance abuse 11(Baker et al.). In this sense,
it becomes evident the importance of other studies that focus on emotional regulation and it
impacts on individuals’ mental health.
Indian Philosophy of life and health- Ayurveda proclaims complete health including physical
mental andspiritual wellbeing. According to Vedas the main purpose of human birth is to attain
Purusharthas -Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. To achieve these aims, one needs a healthy
body, refined emotions and healthy mind. Ayurveda considers body and mind as inter-related and
inter-dependent to each other. Dhi, Dhairya and Atmadivignynanaplays a very important role in
the attainment of healthy mind and it in turn contributes a healthy body. Any factor which
adversely affects the Sareera, Indriya, Satwa and Atma may lead to ill health either at somatic or
psychic level.12 (Jaiswal and Jaiswal #)
Ayurvedic Reference of Stress-The description of conditions similar to stress is available in
Vedic literature but there is no direct reference regarding stress in any of the Ayurvedic literatures.
During Samhitha period the Brihatrayis have given valuable contribution regarding Manas,
Manasikarogas and its management. From Ayurvedic perspective there are two different
manifestation of stress-physical and psychic. Physical stress is caused by overuse or misuse
of the body. For example strenuous exercise for long time without food, suppression of natural
urges leads to vitiation of Pranavahasrotas thus causing cough, breathing difficulty etc.13 (Sharma
and Das #) Mental stress which manifest as emotional disturbances is directly related
to the state of Manas and Hridaya. When person becomes more stressed, it adversely affects
the proper functioning of Dhi, Dhriti, Smriti and thus causesthe common symptoms of stress like

anxiety, confusion, anger and fear. Ayurveda states physiology of a body is contributed by
Tridoshas. Subdivision of tridoshas like Prana vayu, Udanavayu, Samanavayu, Vyanavayu,
Sadhaka pitta, Alochaka pittaandTarpaka kapha have played very important role in the
functioning of Mind. Pranavayucontrols the action of Buddhi, Indriya, Hridaya and Manas,
Udanavayuis responsible for speech, Vyana vayu for all action. Sadhakapittais responsible for
higher mental functions and emotional states of a human being.14(Srikantha Murthy, #)
Buddhic Philosophy of mind and Consciousness - According to Buddhist philosophy, emotion
regulation forms another important aspect of mindfulness, which is the reduction of the negative
and increase of positive emotions, what moves toward an “awakening of consciousness and a
positive state of being” 15,16 (Trungpa, 1984; Garland et al., 2009).
Emotions and its effect on brain and behavior - Previous studies have already investigated that
during the process of emotion regulation, the activation of the prefrontal cortex decreases
amygdala activity 17(Ochsner et al. #)(2004). Similarly, a neuroimaging study that investigated
the effect of the disposition for mindfulness in brain areas predicted that during a task of
identifying emotional content in facial expressions, higher levels of this disposition (as measured
by the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale;2003) 18(Brown and Ryan #) increased activation of
the prefrontal cortex, as well as inhibited amygdala activity 19(Creswell et al.). In addition to
findings from neuroimaging studies, the relation between mindfulness and emotion regulation has
also been investigated in the psychophysiological context. In 2015 Pavlov and others conducted
a study in which a group of 20 experienced meditators was compared to a control group, during
a picture observation/evaluation task of positive and negative related pictures. The behavioral
data and the recording of the electrocardiographic activity demonstrated the positive influence of
the practice of mindfulness in emotional control. 20(Valim et al. #)
Yoga- is a way of life. Yoga explains the purpose of life i.e. Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha and
how we will achieve the purpose in easiest way.Yoga therapy include Asanas, Pranayam, Mudra
and Dhyan(Meditattion) for attainment of complete physical, emotional and mental health.
According to MaharshiPatanjali, Asanas produce soundness with the physical body
whereas the Mudra and Pranayam give us endurance along with calmness to handle the conflicts
of life. Dhyan or Meditation is a very good tool to control our mind and thoughts. It increase focus
on the goal and create awareness for the solution of life distress.
Meditation - According to AcharyaShriram Sharma “Meditation is the key for opening the doors
of mysteries to your mind.”
The term meditation refers to a set of mental exercises that generally involve calmly
limiting thought and attention. Since last decades many scholarly books and journal articles have
argued that meditation does have psychotherapeutic potential.
Meditation produces spirituality along with the cultivation of inner peace, concentration,
positive emotions and they have been reported to reduce stress, agitation and negative emotions

(Buttle). Loving-kindness meditation can positively bring emotional flexibility, rumination,
emotional regulation and psychological flexibility 22(Hinton et al.).
Twin Hearts Meditation - According to Master ChoaKok Sui “Twin Heart Meditation is helpful
to improve positive thinking & human relationship which results in increase of the auric
frequency.” Meditation on twin Hearts is based on the principle that some of the major chakras
are entry points to certain levels or horizons of consciousness. When a person does meditation on
Twin Hearts, divine energy flows down in the form of light, love & power. 23(Sui #)
PanchKosh- The Taitriya Upanishad is a Sanskrit text of the Vedic era, and very early
Upanishad believed to be composed in the first millennium, but its chronology is unclear
(Phillips, 2009). This Upnishad claims that the human existence can be understood as concentric
levels of five sheaths as under-
AnnamayaKosh - Physical Body
PranamayKosh - Invisible Bioplasmic or Energy or Subtle Body
ManomayaKosh - Invisible Bioplasmic or Energy or Subtle Body
VigyanmayKosh - Invisible Bioplasmic or Energy or Subtle Body and
AnandmayaKosh - Karan Sharir or the Body having Purpose of Life.
The main thing described here is that of AnnamayKosh or physical body which is mainly
dependent on food. Whereas, the Subtle body depends on three things -consciousness, mind and
knowledge .24 (Jaiswal and Jaiswal #)
Chakras - To balance or regulate the above three it has chakras or energy centers in the aura. As
the philosophy of the Indian system, and chakras are considered as the science of the inner body.
Chakras are energy vortices, which have physical, psychological and spiritual functions

(Schneider #). To activate cosmic consciousness, it is necessary to activate the crown chakra. In
the western world, we are familiar with the seven primary chakra system. However, the chakras
are not limited to seven or twelve, but two of them are very important one is Anahat located at
the center of chest and commonly known as Heart Chakra and another one is at the top of head
called Sahasrara or Crown chakra. 26(Sui #)
Heart and Crown- Heart chakra has many functions but most important is initiation of Love,
compassion and mercy in one's life so we can say it regulates the positivity or emotional health
of human life. Whereas the crown is responsible for control of mind and Brain so it has the
capacity to regulate mental health.
Master Sui explained that both are connected with each other like needles of minute and
hour in a watch. If the heart chakra rotates or activates it increases the rotation of the crown.
Concept of THM- Twin Hearts Meditation (THM) is a core meditation module in Pranic Healing
and Arhatic Yoga and is aimed at achieving cosmic consciousness23(Sui #). It also serves to
harmonize the world through the blessing of the entire earth with loving-kindness. It is based on

the principle that some major chakras are the gateway to higher levels of consciousness. The
“twin hearts” in MTH refers to the heart chakra, and the crown chakra 23(Sui #). In principle,
when a person practices ‘Meditation on Twin Hearts’, divine energy fills the practitioner with
love and power. This guided meditation includes components of loving-kindness, open
awareness, and self-healing imagery. Meditation on Twin Hearts has been shown to help
adolescents in mitigating perceived stress and enhancing the quality of life 27(Jois et al.).
Participants taking part in MTH experienced immediate cognitive improvements 28(Tarrant et al.),
helps in improving Emotion Regulation in healthy subjects 20(Valim et al.). Dialysis patients
showed less anxiety, depression levels when they practiced MTH29(Dehghani et al., 2015).
Gamma activation of the brain increased by practicing MTH 30(Tarrant et al.). During the recent
pandemic COVID 19, medical practitioners have benefitted in their mental health status by
practicing MTH 31(Bhatia).
Thoughts and Emotion- When we focus on one thought or emotion similar type of thought and
emotion coming continuously in our mind that’s why during stress one feels anxiety, irritability
and such kind of emotions simultaneously and similarly when a person falls in love might feel
the compassion, lightness, happiness, heartfulness, joy etc. 32(Sui #)
Process and effects of THM-In the Twin hearts Meditation first we focus on the place of Heart
chakra and bless the earth with positive thoughts and emotions then it will continue with crown
center and further with simultaneous focus on both. This practice increases the level of positivity
and control over negative thoughts and emotions. It increases the calmness and stillness which is
very required for a healthy mental and emotional hygiene. The practice of Twin Hearts Meditation
also initiates the practice of blessings and givingness which removes the thought of lacking.
During blessing we feel a connection with the entire world which removes the thought of
loneliness which is a major cause of stress and fearfulness that increases the level of anxiety. This
meditation also includes the chanting of Mantra. Higher vibration merges lower vibrations so that
the chanting of Mantra which has very high vibration causes reduction of thoughts and induces
peace of mind and increases calmness and stillness of mind. 33(Sui #)
Conclusion – Stress is a very emerging and progressive illness of human life. It is not only affects
mental health but also physical health. Whereas the practice of Twin Hearts Meditation is a very
simple and effective method to not only balance the emotion but also the thoughts which induce
peace of mind. So it can be very effective tools to control the stressful condition along with
helping to figure out various adverse emotional conditions like fearfulness, anxiety, feeling of
loneliness etc.
