CRAFTS: KULINTANG AND GONG

KULINTANG

Kulintang is a moderm term for an instrumental form of music composed on a row of small,
horizontally- laide gongs that function melodically, accompanied by larger, suspended gong and drums.
Kulintang meticulously carving the design and patters on wax-mold. These wax-molds are then melded
over with clay. It would take more than a couple of hours to hardened under natural environmental
conditions. When the clay is hard, they are cooked over a fire for the wax inside the clay to melt. These
clay molds would then be the base for the brassware. They are only used once since they have to break
them once the brass dries up inside.

Gong

Gong a round piece of metal that hangs in a frame and makes a loud deep sound when it is hit with a
stick. Gongs are used as musical instruments or to give signals, for example that a meal is ready. Gongs
are made mainly from bronze or brass but there are many other alloys in use. Gongs produce two
distinct types of sound. A gong with a substantially flat surface vibrates in multiple modes.
