The fight for the rights of equal education has really been through a lot. Starting with
the advocacy of Horace Mann to have a public and universal school that serves to be the
chance for students who doesn’t have enough capability to sustain their education, to
Catharine Beecher’s specific advocacy of equal rights to education for women, and to
Margaret Bancroft’s education for children with disabilities.
For Horace Mann education in a democratic society should be free, and universal, it
should be nonsectarian, democratic in method, and reliant to a well- trained teacher. His
advocacy about this came from his own experience, he was taught poorly by his teachers but
still managed to learn by himself in Franklin Town Library. He shows interest in various
social issues like politics, education, and social reform. When he became the Secretary of
newly created Massachusetts Board of Education in 1837, this is when he used the position to
do a major education reform to use the local taxes to funds the basic education of every child.
Starting with his reform his influence spread in Massachusetts and more states started to take
his idea of universal schooling. His career of being a lawyer and legislator and as a secretary
of education helps to solve the problem in education that he, himself have experienced.
Horace Mann knew that in order to the public school to succeed we have to improve the
teachers as well and this is when he helped to establish Normal Schools.
Catharine Beecher promotes the right of women to receive a proper education, made a
huge impact about the history of education. Women were thought before to only stay in the
house, do household chores, and be a mother the reason why schools were not prioritized for
them. Beecher made her time realize that being a teacher is not a job only allotted to men, as
their country progress and men shifts from teaching to pursue jobs related to business, she
uses the potential of educated women and advocated for the better education for females and
use this to fulfill the needs for teachers. Though she only believes that women should be
homemakers and teachers, her stand in fighting for the rights of proper education for women
still leads into a big opportunity and shows hope that we can have the social equality that we
are aiming.
Lastly, Bancroft’s special education. We know that even our society today some are
still not that open minded and knowledgeable enough about children with special needs what
more during the old period where there is not enough information provided about those
children and cases. A movement like this is a big step to make the society become more aware
about these conditions and to acknowledge the needs of those children and their specific needs
about education.
Their advocacies have a great contribution and influence on our education today.
There are already lots of public school today, education for all regardless of gender, age, and
social status, we even have special education that is set to fulfill the needs of children with
different condition. I can say that the quality of education that we have today is the fruit of all
the hardship, battles, and advocacy of different people in the past. We still have a lot of
changes to do to before we can say that the education system we have is truly the best and
available for everyone.
