Title: Wuthering Heights

Author: Emily Bronte

SETTING

The majority of this novel is set in the Yorkshire moors, specifically at two neighboring houses,
Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. Wuthering Heights is a remote and desolate farmhouse
situated on the moors, while Thrushcross Grange is a more refined and elegant manor. The wild and
rugged landscape of the moors serves as a backdrop for the passionate and tumultuous events that
unfold in the story.

CHARACTERS

1. Heathcliff - Heathcliff is one of the central characters of the story.

2. Catherine Earnshaw - Catherine Earnshaw is Heathcliff's childhood friend and love interest.

3. Edgar Linton - Edgar Linton is a wealthy gentleman who marries Catherine, despite her love for
Heathcliff. He is kind, refined, and well-mannered.

4. Nelly Dean - Nelly Dean is the main narrator of the story.

5. Hindley Earnshaw - Hindley Earnshaw is Catherine's older brother and Heathcliff's adoptive brother.

6. Isabella Linton - Isabella Linton is Edgar's sister who falls in love with Heathcliff.
7. Joseph - Joseph is a servant at Wuthering Heights.

PLOT

The story begins with Mr. Lockwood, a new tenant at Thrushcross Grange, who becomes intrigued by his
mysterious neighbor, Heathcliff, and the strange occurrences at Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff's home.
Lockwood visits Wuthering Heights and encounters various characters, including the housekeeper Nelly
Dean, who recounts the events that have led to the current state of affairs.

The narrative shifts back in time to the childhood of Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw. They form a
deep bond as they grow up together but their relationship is complicated by their class differences.
Catherine becomes torn between her love for Heathcliff and her desire to improve her social status,
leading her to marry the wealthy Edgar Linton.

The betrayal devastates Heathcliff and he seeks revenge against those he believes have harmed him,
including the Earnshaw and Linton families. His deep love for Catherine turns into a destructive
obsession, haunting him for the rest of his life. The story explores themes of love, revenge, social class,
and the destructive power of passion.

Over time, the next generation grapples with the consequences of their parents' actions. Catherine and
Edgar have a daughter, also named Catherine, who becomes entangled with Heathcliff's son, Linton. The
young Catherine is manipulated by Heathcliff, who plots to secure control over Thrushcross Grange and
Wuthering Heights through their marriage. However, his plans are foiled when Linton dies, leaving
Heathcliff alone and tormented.

Ultimately, the story concludes with Heathcliff's death, followed shortly by Catherine's, as they are
believed to be reunited in the afterlife. The novel ends with the older generation reflecting on the
tumultuous events that transpired and the legacy of pain they have left behind.

MORAL LESSON

Wuthering Heights teaches you that everyone has a bad side. Brontë created no virtuous characters, all
of them are capable of cruelty, all are a combination of good and evil, like real people. This moral lesson
is one of the most life changing experiences you may get out of reading.
