[Semester 1 2023-24]

Title: Digital Transformation Strategy for a Traditional Business

Objective: The objective of this project is to develop a comprehensive digital transformation
strategy for a traditional business, focusing on leveraging information systems and technology to
enhance efficiency, customer experience, and competitive advantage. This project aligns with the
"Information Systems, Organizations, and Strategy" topic.
Step 1: Business Selection
Choose any traditional business as the subject of your digital transformation plan. The business
should not have a significant digital presence. Below are a few examples.
1. Local Bookstore: A small independent bookstore that relies on manual inventory management
and in-store sales. You can explore solutions to enhance their online presence, e-commerce
capabilities, and customer engagement.
2. Family-Owned Restaurant: A traditional restaurant that operates primarily through walk-in
customers. You can consider digital solutions for online reservations, a mobile app for orders,
or a loyalty program.
3. Local Flower Shop: A flower shop that could benefit from an e-commerce platform for online
orders and delivery services. You can explore ways to streamline inventory and order
management.
4. Boutique Clothing Store: A boutique that needs to boost its online presence and e-commerce
capabilities. You can consider solutions for online catalog management and customer
engagement.
5. Coffee Shop: A neighborhood coffee shop that could benefit from a mobile app for orders,
loyalty programs, and digital marketing efforts.
6. Local Grocery Store: A small grocery store with traditional inventory management. You can
explore solutions for online orders, delivery, and efficient stock management.
7. Gift Shop: A gift shop specializing in unique and handmade items. You can investigate how to
expand their market reach through e-commerce and social media.
Step 2: Needs Assessment
Conduct a detailed needs assessment for the chosen business. This should include the following
specific requirements:
• Identify the business's current manual inventory management system and its limitations.
• Analyze the customer checkout process and identify potential areas for improvement.
• Interview the business owner or employees to gather information about customer
preferences and pain points.

Example of Needs Assessment:
For instance, during the needs assessment, you would discover that the manual inventory
management system often leads to discrepancies in stock levels, making it challenging to meet
customer demands promptly.
Step 3: Research and Technology Exploration
Research and explore technology solutions and systems that can benefit the chosen business. This
can include point-of-sale systems, e-commerce platforms, customer relationship management
(CRM) software, inventory management tools, etc.
Step 4: Digital Transformation Plan
Develop a comprehensive digital transformation plan. The following specific requirements should
be met:
• Specify the implementation of various systems (e.g., POS, e-commerce, CRM) to improve
inventory management, customer checkout, customer relationship management, and other
identified areas.
• Provide a timeline for the phased implementation of the selected systems.
• Explain how these systems will enhance efficiency by addressing specific issues identified in
the needs assessment.
• Estimate the budget required for implementing the selected systems and discuss potential
ROI for each.
• Outline a strategy for employee training on the new systems and managing the change.
Detailed Requirements for Digital Transformation Plan
• Specify the exact features and benefits of each selected system.
• Provide a month-by-month timeline for the implementation, including milestones and
responsible parties for each system.
• Explain how each system contributes to improving the customer experience, such as faster
checkouts, improved inventory availability, and better customer relationship management.
• Break down the budget into hardware, software, training, and ongoing maintenance costs
for each system.
• Offer insights into how each investment is expected to lead to cost savings or increased
revenue.
• Detail the change management plan, including training schedules and communication
strategies.
Step 5: Written Report Submission
Prepare a written report that provides a comprehensive explanation of your digital transformation
plan. The report should be clear, well-organized, and professionally presented. Include all elements
from the digital transformation plan.
