Introduction
5G changes the game for everyone. For consumers, 5G supports immersive
experiences, higher mobile data rates and Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity
that will revolutionize their interactions with the world around them. For
enterprises, 5G enhances 4G LTE capabilities to provide reliable wireless that
enables new IoT applications, drives industries towards the Fourth Industrial
Revolution and creates new opportunities to improve business efficiency.

The transition to 5G also presents exciting opportunities for mobile operators to

deliver new services. According to the Nokia 5G Maturity Index, a comprehensive
assessment of operators’ readiness for 5G transformation, the most highly
anticipated use cases include connected cars, autonomous vehicles, immersive
augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences, tactile internet and
critical healthcare monitoring.

The degree of prioritization and readiness relative to 5G use cases varies based
on geography and ecosystem development. But it’s clear that all operators and
enterprises need smart planning to capitalize on many new opportunities that
5G brings.

Market opportunity
Wireless video surveillance is a cost-effective way to enhance safety and security in industrial sites,
campuses and public spaces. It’s also increasingly popular: ABI Research estimates that the video

Nokia and Optus establish 5G

FWA in Australia
Australia’s Optus was the first operator to deploy our plug-and-play
FastMile 5G indoor gateway in a live network and successfully launch
FWA service using the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) 5G
New Radio (5G NR) standard. Optus now uses FastMile to offer FWA
services to select residential customers.

The successful test of our 5G network and gateway was an

important milestone in Optus’s plan to launch a commercial 5G
FWA service that would dramatically enhance wireless broadband
performance in homes across Australia. Optus has expanded on this
plan by using FastMile to support services that allow customers to
stream multiple 4K videos simultaneously.

Optus used our solutions to launch the world’s first live 5G FWA
network in February 2019. The network is based on the latest 3GPP
release 15 5G NR standard. At the launch date, Optus had three live
5G sites. This number rose to 50 within a month. Optus plans to
extend coverage to 1,200 sites. These sites will include residential
locations and hotspots around airports, train stations, sports
stadiums and central business districts.

5G hospital in Oulu, Finland

Nokia is taking part in a multi-partner research project that seeks
to improve patient care and lower costs by making a fully 5G
connected hospital a reality. We have provided a 5G network that will
enable the Oulu University Hospital to test more than 90 percent
of its procedures and determine how digitalization and reliable
connectivity could enhance them.

Part of the project involves studying the patient experience from

admission to discharge. The goal is to understand the concerns
and questions that patients have at different points of the process
and identify connected health services that could simplify their
treatment and care.

This builds on the previous succesful projects, where use cases such
as medical equipment tracking, automated and assisted medicine
distribution has been implemented improving operational efficiency,
and saving valuable time for healthcare workers, so they can focus
on what matters the most, taking care of patients.

Global connected car market value

Market opportunity 2019 $US42.6B

According to the World Health Organization, road accidents cause approximately 1.35
million deaths and leave up to 50 million people injured or disabled each year. These
crashes cost most countries about 3 percent of their gross domestic product. [9] But
people are on the road more than ever: Average Americans spend 18 days in their cars

Current market forecasts indicate that by 2022, all new cars and trucks will be connected New cars connected
to the network. [11] This trend aligns with the rise of 5G, which will support new
experiences that make road travel easier, safer and more enjoyable, and give people back
time that could be used for other activities. 5G will also enhance in-car entertainment and
support new business applications that enable highway transport and logistics companies
