Assignment 1 – Choosing a Home (Finding a Rental Property)

Most rental properties are now listed through rental websites.


RentFaster.ca is a popular rental website for Calgarians. Kijiji.ca, and Facebook
Marketplace are other avenues many people use to find rental properties as well.
You will need to use one of these websites for your assignment.

Imagine you have graduated from high school and are either working or
participating in an educational or training program. You have made the decision
to move into a place of your own.

1. Estimate your monthly income (+/- $1500 if you are a full time student
& $3000 working full time) and the amount you could spend on rent
(30% of your monthly income)
2. Consider financial and lifestyle factors, choose a type and location of
housing, and explain whether you will have roommates or not.
3. Using a property rental website, find two rental units that interest you.
Include a picture, hyperlink, and description, including the cost and
the features for both.
4. Compare the advantages and disadvantages (use bullets) of the two
units.
5. Choose one of the units to rent, and explain your decision. What
factors (use bullets) did you consider?
6. Explore the advantages and disadvantages (use bullets) of living on
your own. What are the costs and benefits compared to staying in your
current home?
