Membrane Cell
Most common chloralkali process
The membrane is used to prevent reaction between chlorine and hydroxide ions
A saturated aqueous NaCl electrolyte solution is passed to first chamber
the anode oxidizes the chloride ions and the cathode reduces the hydogen ions into gas, releasing
hydroxide in the process.
The ion-exchange membrane allows sodim ions (Na+) to pass through and react with the hydroxide
ions, forming soidum hydroxide or caustic soda
