BIODIVERSITY AND ITS CONSERVATION
* Bio means ‘life’ and diversity means ‘variety’
Definition:
Biodiversity is defined as , the variety and variability
among all groups of living organism and the ecosystem in
which they occur.
Classification:
1,Genetic diversity
2.Species diversity
3.Community (or) Ecosystem diversityGENETIC DIVERSITY
Genetic diversity
Genetic diversity is the diversity within species ie.,
variation of genes within the species. eg.,rice varieties.
teak wood trees : Indian teak,burma teak,malasian
teak.
It refers to the total genetic information contained in the
genes of individuals of plants, animals and
microorganisms.
The genes found in organisms can form enormous
number of combinations each of which gives rise to
some variability.
when the genes within the same species show different
versions due to new combinations, it is called genetic
variability..
SPECIES DIVERSITY
Species diversity is the diversity between different
species. The sum of varieties of all the living
organisms at the species level is known as species
diversity.
Species richness is the simplest measure of
biodiversity and is simply a count of the number of
different species in a given area.
Plant species : Apple, mango, wheat
Animal species : lion, tiger, elephant, deer.COMMUNITY OR ECOSYSYTEM DIVERSITY
* The diversity at the ecological or habitat level is
known as ecosysytem diversity.
* A large region with different ecosysytem can be
considered as ecosysytem diversity.
* Eg., River ecosystem.Classifying Biodiversity
What is biodiversity?
Bio- irving organisms
Diversity- means understanding that exch Individual I= unique
and recognising Individual differences.
Biodiversity ts the variety of all Ife forms on earth - the different
plants, animals and micro-organisms and the ecosystems of which
‘they are a part.
Definition: ‘Bislogleal diversity’ means the varlabillty among living
organisms from ail sources Including, Inter alla, terrestrial, marine amd
other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are
A part; thls Includes diversity within specles, between species and of
ecosystems.
Types of Biodiversity
Species Diversity: Every ecosystem contains a unique collection of
species, all Interacting with each other.
Genetic Diversity: Gentle diversity describes how closely related
the members of one species are Ina given ecosystem.
Ecosystem Diversity: deals with the variations In ecosystems within
a geographical location and Its overall Impact on human existence
and the environment
Ecological diversity: Is a type of blodiversity. It Is the variation In
‘the ecosystems found In a region or the variation
In ecosystems over the whole planet
Functional Diversity: refers te the variety of
functions or characteristics of a particular ecosystem In th
marine blodiversity. Functional diversity reflects
‘the blologloal complexity of an ecosystem.
