S-BLOCK ELEMENTS
The element of Group 1 (Alkali metals) and group 2 (alkaline earth metals ) with Valence shell electronic
configuration ns1 and ns2 Respectively Belongs to the S block elements. They have low Ionisation enthalpy
they show a strong tendency to donate electrons the metallic character and reactivity Increases down the
group they pre dominately form ionic compound.
P-BLOCK ELEMENTS
P block elements comprise of elements belonging to the 13,14,15,16 , 17, and 18th group. This P block
elements along with the S block elements are known as representative elements or main group elements.
The outermost shell configuration of P block element is ns2 np 1-6 each is Terminated as a noble gas with
electronic configuration ns2 np6.
Elements of 17th group are called Halogens ( Salt producers) while that of 16th group is called (halogens ore
forming). These 2 groups have high negative electron gain enthalpy and hence can readily gains 1 or 2
electrons to attain noble gas configuration. Metallic character increases from top to bottom Within groups
and non metallic character Increases across the period in block the pre dominantly Form covalent compound.
