Assessment Brief 2023/24

Please make sure you carefully read and understand the question or task. If you have
unanswered questions, please post these on the course Moodle Discussion Forum, and we’ll
respond.

1. Question
Identify an operation in any organisation (let’s call it X) of your choice. Elaborate on the
operational processes and offer potential recommendations to improve the operational
processes. Consider alternative solutions and rank these on their effectiveness for improving
operational performance.
More specifically, you are to determine the scope of your chosen operation, giving details such
as required resources, activities and outputs. You would then analyse, where relevant, to what
extent performance objectives for operations are in alignment with risks, constraints,
productivity, or even compare how operational processes have to change as a result of
achieving sustainability goals, net zero emissions, resilience, geopolitical perturbations, etc.
The content should demonstrate engagement with theories, conceptualisations, frameworks
and subject terms drawn from the domain of operations management for both analysis X’s
operations management and evaluation of alternative solutions; this extends to consulting
teaching materials. Use of concepts for operations management beyond what is directly
addressed is also allowed as long as they bear relevance to the analysis, evaluation and
argumentation.

Bonus:
● Include a discussion on what the impact of digitalisation will be on operational
performance.
● A maximum of 2 grade points will be awarded depending on the quality of the discourse.
● The additional allowance for the word count is 300 words.
● Eligibility for the bonus points requires at least two additional relevant publications in
academic journals to be included.
● Also, the text ‘REQUEST FOR BONUS’ be placed on the title page, even if the discourse
is integrated in the report, it should be marked so that markers can see which text should
be considered. If this request is not indicated on the front page, no bonus points will be
awarded.
2. Further Details
You should adopt formal reporting styles for the report (for which guidance will be provided),.
The following points are mandatory for the report:
• The maximum word count for the main body of text is: 3,000 words; this word count
excludes front matter, list of references, appendices, figures and tabulations.
• At least one textbook on operations management and three relevant publications in
academic journals must be used; these sources should inform the selection and use of
theories, laws of observed regularities, conceptualisations, frameworks, methods, etc. If
the threshold for the number of academic publications to this purpose is not met, the grade
will not be higher than a D1.
• All sources must be referenced using the Harvard style, for which guidance on further
details at the Library of the University of Glasgow refers to:
https://library.leeds.ac.uk/referencing-examples/9/leeds-harvard. In addition to theoretical
foundations, referencing concerns data and reporting about company X in its various
manifestations.
• For both quoting and paraphrasing page numbers of the fragment of a source should be
added to citations-in-text.

Be careful, it is your thoughts, reasoning, recommendations that will count, not those, if you
have selected a case from a published source, of the original academic researcher and/or
practitioner. Use appendices for descriptive material relating to the selected topic; use your
words wisely, identify an element of your analysis that you consider key, then go deeper into
this element —depth not breadth is essential to successfully completing this assignment.

3. Feedback
Individual feedback will normally be provided via Moodle. Generic (class-level) feedback
and grade profiles will normally be posted on Moodle.

4. Submitting
Submit your coursework using the named submission link in the Assessment Section
of your Course Moodle page. Take care to submit by the deadline or you may face
lateness penalties.

1. Generative AI
Generative AI offers many new opportunities for learning and the development of academic
skill although, like any technology, it must be used judiciously. Students should consider the
data protection and privacy issues that can be caused by using AI. Consider how your
personal information will be used before signing up to AI tools and ensure you read any data
protection policies before interacting with AI. You should not feel pressured into using AI
tools if you are uncomfortable with the data protection or privacy issues. Bear in mind that
responses to AI queries can be biased due to the inherent biases present in their training
data. This can lead to unfair and discriminatory responses.
Copying (including paraphrasing) AI responses to queries would be considered as
plagiarism, as it would for copying the response from any internet search.
Further information can be found here.

2. Extensions and non-submission with good

cause
Extension of up to 5 days
If you experience extenuating circumstances which prevent you from completing your
assessment by the deadline, you can request an extension of up to 5 days via Moodle.

Good cause for non-submission, late submission and extension of more than
5 days
We understand that during your studies, events that you cannot control (e.g., death of a
family member, personal circumstances, physical and mental ill health, etc.) may impact
your ability to perform well in or complete assessments.
If you are experiencing such circumstances, you can submit a good cause claim in
MyCampus.
You have five working days from the assessment deadline date to submit your good cause
claim. If you are prevented from submitting your claim within five days for good reason, you
must detail this in your claim. You will receive an acknowledgement on MyCampus when
you submit. After you have submitted your claim, you have five working days to retract it.
