My future career is to become a music therapist. The discipline I have chosen to research is

psychology. I have chosen to research this discipline because the career that I am choosing to pursue

incorporates both music and psychology. In addition, I am fascinated by the mind and love understanding

how people think. The name of the scholar who works in the discipline I am researching is Dr. Alfonso

Campbell, who is a psychology faculty member at Howard University. Dr. Campell pursued his

psychology undergraduate degree at Morehouse College (1970); he later graduated from Howard

University (1970), where he received his Master in General-Experimental Psychology. Lastly, he received

a PhD in Physiological Psychology from Pennsylvania State University, and he later attended the

University of Michigan-Ann Arbor for his postdoctoral study, where he studied clinical neuropsychology

(1977–1988). While achieving his academic goals, he became an assistant professor at Norfolk State

University (1976–1977).

Dr.Campbell is known for studying the social, mental, emotional, and physical aspects of African

Americans. He has published countless research articles, but one that stood out to me was his article in

Eating Behavior (volume 9, issue 2, April 2008, pages 137–142), Perceived stress and eating behaviors in

a community-based sample of African n Americans. In this article, the following doctor conducts research

on how "stress is associated with greater food consumption,"(Campbell, 2008) but within the African

American community. In this study, they used a total of 159 African Americans, but 32 were disapproved

of “due to missing data" (Campbell, 2008). As a result, 76 men and 83 women remained. They were then

divided into sizable groups to examine the relationship between renal health outcomes in an AA

community sample and stress and psychoneuroimmunological factors that were enrolled alongside the

participants. Churches, medical facilities, and neighborhood get-togethers served as recruitment sites.

For this experiment, they made the participants complete an Eating Behavior Pattern

Questionnaire (EBPQ). This questionnaire helps construct a measurement of dietary fat intake among

both men and women in the current study. The EBPQ was tracking the following eating behaviors: "low-

fat eating, emotional eating, snacking on sweets, cultural and lifestyle behaviors, haphazard planning, and
3

meal planning. as well as using age, year of education, and income to also play a part in the outcome of

stress. As a result of this research study, we gather that "self-reported stress is associated with a shift

toward unhealthy dietary practices" (Campbell, 2008). We can see that African American women are

more prone to stress eating than African American males, as can be seen in the graphs provided. We see

that due to excessive stress, people will tend to rely on “comfort foods” to reduce the negative emotions

that they are conveying.

In conclusion, this study has been an eye-opener because it helped me understand the relationship

between stress and high-fat eating behaviors caused by haphazard meal planning. Also, we as African

Americans must find something else to do besides eat instead of eating, which leads to a high chance of

being overweight or obese.
