compound interest rate?

Question 11. A crane operator works 10 hour/day, 5 days a week. A base wage of $ 36
/hour is paid for all straight-time work, 8 hour/day, 5 day/week. An overtime rate of two times
is paid for all hours over 8 hour/day, Monday through Friday. The rate for workmen’s
insurance is 15.6% of base wage. The social security and unemployment taxes are 12% of
actual wages in total. Fringe benefits are $ 5.6 /hour. Calculate the average hourly cost of
the crane operator. (2 marks)
Solution:
2. Benefits
Insurance: 36 x 15.6% = $ 5.616 /h (0.5’)
Social security and unemployment taxes: 43.2 x 12% = $ 5.184 /h (0.5’)
Fringe benefits: $ 5.6 /h
Question 12. A total 120 m3 of clay has to be transported to a job site 15 km away using a
10 m3 dump truck. A tractor loader is used to load the truck at a rate of 80 m3/hour. The
travel times for haul and return of the truck are 32 minutes and 25 minutes, respectively. It
takes 3 minutes to dump the load. The cost of the truck is $ 42 /hour, the truck driver is $ 28
/hour. The cost of the loader is $ 55 /hour, the loader operator is $ 32 /hour. The average
working time is 45 minutes in one hour. Determine the total time, total cost, and the cost/unit
of transporting the clay. (3 marks)
Solution:
2. Cycle time
Load = 10/80 = 0.125 h
Haul = 32/60 = 0.533 h
Dump = 3/60 = 0.05 h
Return = 25/60 = 0.417 h
Total cycle time = 1.125 h/trip (0.5’)
3. Production rate
Number of trips per hour = 1/1.125 = 0.889
Quantity hauled per hour = 10×0.889 = 8.89 m3/h (0.5’)
Production rate = 8.89 × 45/60 = 6.668 m3/h (0.5’)
