Activity 2: Pre-Printed Content Notes (13 mins)
Reproduction is the process by which plants and animals produce offspring. There are two main
forms: sexual and asexual reproduction. In sexual reproduction, an organism combines the
genetic information from each of its parents and is genetically unique. In asexual reproduction,
one parent copies itself to form a genetically identical offspring.
Plant Reproduction ‘Animal Reproduction
Life cycle Alternation of Generations No Alternation of Generations
Gametes Haploid Gametes . Haploid Gametes
Spores Haploid Spores No Spores
Gametes Made By | Haploid gametophyte, by Mitosis | Diploid Organism, by Meiosis
Spores Made By Diploid sporophyte, by Meiosis, No Spores
Figure 1 Shows the difference between plant and animal reproduction in terms of life cycle, gametes, and spores.
‘Asexual Reproduction
Sexual Reproduction
- Uniparental
- Somatic cells are involved
- It involves the production of asexual spores
- Offspring are genetically similar to parents
- The rate of reproduction is faster
- Biparental
= Germ cells are involved
- Itinvolves formation and fusion of gametes
- Offspring are genetically dissimilar to parents
~The rate of reproduction is slower

Nutrition refers to the activities by which living things obtain raw materials from the environme,.
and transport them into their cells. The cells metabolize these raw materials and synthesi..,
structural components, enzymes, energy-tich compounds, and other biologically importany
substances. All the elements and compounds taken in by a living thing are called nutrients.

Figure 3 Shows plant and animal nutrition, Plants are considered autotrophs because they can produce their own
Jood. It does not depend on others for its source of nutrition. While antmals are considered heterotrophs because
‘they cannot produce their own food and mainly depend on others to survive,
Mechanisms for Gas Exchange
All living things obtain the energy they need by metabolizing energy-rich compounds, such as
carbohydrates and fats. In the majority of organisms, this metabolism takes place by respiration,
a process that requires oxygen. In the process, carbon dioxide gas is produced and must be
removed from the body. In plant cells, carbon dioxide may appear to be a waste product of
respiration, too, but because it is used in photosynthesis, carbon dioxide may be considered a by-
product. Gas exchange is thus an essential process in energy metabolism.

Activity 3: Skill-building Activities (with answer key) (18 mins + 2 mins checking)
Exercise 1. You've already been familiar with the use of the Venn Diagram in your previous grade
level. Identify the similarities and differences between Plant Animal Reproduction. Kindly utilize
the space provided below.
We know that animals can get their food by haunting prey and using plants as
their source of food. It is called 1, __ nutrition is the mode that
depends only on some living things to get foods.
What do you call those animals which eat only plants? These are 2.
‘What about those which feed on meat only? They are 3. . How
about the animals that eat plants and meat? 4, is the correct answer,
Mentioned above are the examples HOLOZOIC mode of nutrition in animals.
There are also some organisms that get their nutrition through attaching
themselves on or thriving inside a host. It is called 5. nutrition. Will
you give some examples of this mode of nutrition? (Dog and Ticks)
You may also find some organisms growing on dead trees like mushrooms.
They are getting nutrients from the thing they are decomposing. This an
example of 6. Tiutrition, Now you know the kinds of heterotrophic
nutrition, Let us proceed to others mode of getting nutrition.

Photosynthesis is a process where plants use light from the sun to convert from the
air and from the soil into to feed the plant and is given out in the air.

Activity 6: Thinking about Learning (5 mins)
Good start kiddo! Happy learning ahead. Kindly answer the following questions describing what
you have learned in this session.
1. Which part of the module is the most helpful in learning the concepts?
2. What is the most challenging activity? Why?
FAQs
1. How does animal gain nutrients from the food they eat? During cellular respiration animal cells
combine oxygen with food molecules to release energy to live and function, Remember that
cellular respiration produces carbon dioxide as a waste product. Animals use energy to grow,
reproduce, and to function.

2. Why is photosynthesis important? Because of the oxygen released by plants during
photosynthesis, life on Earth is possible for humans and all inhabitants of the planet. 3. What is
meant by “synthesis’? This means “creating” or “creation”. It is a combination of ideas to form a
theory or system. Ex. Chemosynthesis, the synthesis of organic compounds (substances/
chemicals) by bacteria or other living organisms using energy derived from reactions involving
inorganic chemicals, typically in the absence of sunlight.
