Upper Primary (ages ● Set up a tent using LNT


9-11) ● Independently pack their own pack for an overnight experience
● Successful management of personal hygiene
● Start a campfire and cook a simple meal on a stick
● Identify weather patterns throughout an experience (recognize
approaching weather and prepare for it)
● Effectively manage their own comfort (rain jacket, hat, sunscreen, etc…)
● Note the presence of other species without seeing them.
● Confidently be away from home for a period of time (e.g. 3D2N)
Middle Years (ages ● Basic Outdoor Knots (bowline, overhand, square, half-hitch, taught line
11-14) hitch) ● Cook a two item meal on a camp stove/campfire
● Beginning ability to reflect on and effectively work in a group (lead and
follow)
● Successfully complete a moderate hike (approx 5 kilometers with varied
terrain)
● Ability to identify examples/non-examples of the 7 principles of Leave no
Trace ethics and practices
● Knowledge of local flora and fauna
● Successful self-management of thermoregulation
● Confidently be away from home for a period of time (e.g. 5D4N)
High School (ages ● Resilience amidst challenge
14-19) ● Agency to direct group and self toward shared success
● Water safety skills
● Basic navigational skills
● Apply Leave No Trace ethics and practices
● Basic First Aid
● Basic Risk Assessment skills and emergency response (to changes in
weather, etc…)
● Technical outdoor skills related to specific activities (for example paddle
strokes, climbing knots, sailing)
● Food planning and preparation
● Participate in an overnight Journey (travel/camp/travel) of at least 1
night
● Confidently be away from home for a period of time (e.g. at least 5D4N)
High School (ages ● Create and participate in a multiday journey itinerary
16-18) ● Metacognitive skills to understand self amidst problem solving and
conflict resolution
● Be agents in their own safety, and proactively and systematically manage
risk without prompting
● Demonstrate understanding of conservation issues and challenges
● Articulate and take action to reflect their environmental ethic
● Survival skills, improvised shelters
● Independent travel skills on a multi-day journey (including preparing and
managing their own meal/kitchen, outdoor skills in a technical outdoor
environment such as one or more of the following kayaking, hiking, sailing,
etc…)
● Performance of complex roles with responsibilities
● Optional: Wilderness first aid skills
● Confidently be away from home in the outdoors for an extended time
(e.g. 6 - 10 days+)
