The Rain

It is a short beautiful symbolic poem gleaned by the pen of W.H. Davies. Nature
and hardship of life are the theme of the poet. It is the twofold moralistic and
dedicated poem. In this poem, the poet expresses his views about rain and social
discrimination has prevailed in our all walks of the life. He hopes that the social
discrimination will wipe out one day from the society.
The poet portrays a beautiful scene of nature. It is simple description of sight of
the rain. The rain drops fall on top of thick leaves. The upper leaves after
quenching their thirst pass on the drops to the lower leaves. Upper leaves are the
symbol of rich people who enjoy the blessings of the nature first and then lower
leaves are the symbols of poor people, which are deprived of from the blessings
of the nature.
A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
John Keats
The poet describes that soon, it will stop raining and sun comes out. It shines
equally upon all leaves without any differentiation. It means to say that there
would be equality in society just like the sunshine that spreads all over the world
equally. This sunshine is both for dark and round drops of rain and rich green
leaves. Here dark drops are the simile of misery and poverty of the world, but the
poet is hopeful and optimistic. He believes in sunshine because:
Sunshine is delicious and rain is refreshing.
