Universal Design This lesson will support students’ engagement by promoting expectations and
Rationale beliefs that optimize motivation. It will promote representation through
multiple media. It will also guide appropriate goal setting.
Lesson Idea The point of this lesson is to get students to understand the difference
between total, kinetic and potential energy. The standards will be addressed
before the lesson in the form of a warmup. Students will have completed an
introductory lesson the day before and have prior (introductory) knowledge of
the material.

Students will be given a handout with questions pertaining to energy.

Students will complete a handout, which will emphasize playing with variables
such as height and speed. The activity should take one class period to
complete. Students will be evaluated on the accuracy of their responses.
After all students have completed the assignment, the teacher will go over
and reiterate any questions or frequently missed questions.
Design Reflection Students are expected to get a general idea of the correlations between total,
potential and kinetic energy. This lesson is not intended to make students
masters on the subject. This lesson is part of the broader understanding of
energy and how it is calculated. It will be further extended to bridge the gap
between kinematics and energy.
