Open House
After dinner, Mom said, "Tom, please put down the book. It is time to
get dressed."
"Sort of," said Mom. "We are going to school this evening for an open

don't have to stay there. Please get ready to go."
Tom was a little bit afraid. When he got to school, he held Mom's hand.
The school seemed big.
They walked down the hall. Outside each door was a list. Mom looked at the first list. It was for room 1A.

The door was open. There were others there, too. Tom walked in. Mom walked in.
There was a big desk. It was for the teacher. Her name was Miss Pool.
There were smaller desks. Tom counted them. There were 25 desks.
Each desk had a name on it. Tom walked around. He looked at the desks. He looked at the names.
Tom stopped.
There was a book for reading. There was one for spelling. There were other books, too. There were also books for

Tom said hi. He was not sure what to do. He liked Miss Pool. He wanted Miss Pool to like him, too.

Miss Pool.

They went to one corner of the room. There was a fish tank. The water pump hummed. There was a hamster in a
cage. It was curled in a ball. There was a tank with hermit crabs.
"I hope to hatch butterflies later on," said Miss Pool. "They call this the animal class."
"I can see that," said Miss Pool. "I think you will be a good helper."
Tom talked all the way home. He talked about his desk. He talked about his class. Most of all, he talked about
Miss Pool.
"I can see that you are not afraid now," said Mom. "That is good."
