*It is recommended that the Student Learning Objectives (SLO) checklist be used for developing an SLO. For an SLO to be approved,
all criteria in the checklist must be met.

CHECKLIST ITEM: Student Growth Goal NOTE: ITEM WILL BE MARKED LATE (BEYOND REQUIRED START DATE OF 06-09-23)

SLO

Content Area:

Elementary General Music

Grade Level(s):

2-5, SLO focused on 2nd grade

Type of SLO:

Class-level

Course-level

Targeted

Multi-course

Please see : An Introduction to Student Learning Objectives for a definition of each type of SLO.

Interval of Instruction:

Sept 2023-May 2024

Student Population

Identify the students included in the SLO and explain why the students were selected.

Justifies why this class and/or targeted group was selected.

Describes the characteristics of the student population including the numbers of students with special needs relevant to the SLO
(e.g., I have 4 students with reading disabilities, 2 English language learners...).

For this evaluation time period, data from 2nd grade students will be used.
Learning Standards or Competencies

List the state-adopted standards or competencies that are connected to the learning content.

Aligns to specific state-adopted standards.

Represents the big ideas or domains of content taught during the interval of instruction.

Flows to school improvement plan where applicable.

The Michigan Arts Education Music Standards that will be evaluated are:
ART.M.1.2.7 Expand the complexity of (rhythm) patterns
ART.M.1.2.9 Use a system to read quarter notes and rests, eighth notes, and half notes

Baseline Data

Describe the data that were reviewed in the creation of the SLO. Explain how the data support the SLO.

Identifies sources of information about students (e.g., test scores from prior years, trend data, results of pre-assessments).

Summarizes student data to demonstrate specific student need for the learning content tied to specific standards(including
strengths and weeknesses).

At the start of the 2023-2024 school year, many differentiated activities are used to informally assess the music knowledge and
experience of 2nd grade students at Jefferson Elementary School. Through these activities, it has been determined that 2nd grade
students display the expected music skills as listed in the Michigan Arts Education Music Standards. We will, therefore, continue to
develop these skills and expand them to meet the 2nd grade Michigan Arts Education Music Standards.

Assessment

Name the instrument that will be used to measure the outcome of the SLO.

Identifies assessments that have been reviewed by content experts to effectively measure course content and reliably measure
student learning as intended.

Selects measures with sufficient "stretch" so that all students may demonstrate learning, or identifies supplemental assessments to
cover all ability levels.

Provides a plan for combining multiple assessments if multiple summative assessments are used.

Students will have muliple opportunities to show their skill mastery wit oral, written, and performance-based classroom assessments.

Growth Targets

Identify the quantitative targets that will demonstrate achievement of the SLO. Each student included in the SLO should have a growth
target.

Identifies baseline or pre-assessment data to determine appropriate growth.

Ensures all students in the SLO have a rigorous and attainable target.

Sets individual or differentiated growth targets.

Baseline and trend data support established targets.

At least 80% of students in 2nd grade will demonstrate mastery of 2nd grade rhythmic skills. These skills include keeping a steady
beat and reading half notes and half rests.

Rationale

Explain your rationale for setting the targets for student growth; identify how the targets connect with the school improvement plan.

Explains why target is appropriate for the population.

Uses data to identify student needs and determine appropriate targets.

Explains how targets align with broader school and district goals.

Sets rigorous expectations for student and teachers.

Having students proficient in the foundational rhythmic skills of music will allow them to progress through elementary music as
described in the Michigan Arts Education Music Standards. Research has also shown that music skills support and strengthen reading
skills.

Instructional Strategies and Interventions

Describe the instructional strategies and interventions you will use to help students reach growth targets; share how you will monitor
students' progress.

Lists evidence-based teaching srategies/interventions.

Explains how teaching strategies/interventions will be used to support student learning.

Describes how student progress will be monitored.

Lessons and materials from the Kodaly Method (rhythm syllables) as well as other teacher-created resources will be used for music
instruction. Formative assessments will be conducted and recorded on the class seating chart as well as the class data sheet. These
assessments will be used to drive instruction that leads to mastery.
