Emma Boone

She’s known as our 11th grade Humanities teacher and our intergalactic expert – an
adventurer who has taken a step forward and has been welcomed into our community. This is
Emma Boone. She is a science, english, and social studies teacher. Outside of the classroom,
Emma loves rock climbing, trail running, reading, writing, drawing and spending time with her
sweet pup, Chili Dog. She is a certified yoga instructor and an aerial acrobatics instructor.

Emma grew up in Philadelphia and moved to Colorado when attending college. Emma
has a Bachelor’s degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Colorado,
Boulder as well as a Master’s in Education from Fort Lewis College with secondary certifications
in language arts, science and math. “Personally I really like school, when I was in school I
wanted to become a teacher. A lot of jobs in the real world are limited, you show up, you do that
same thing and then you go home and repeat. But in teaching there is so much variety”. Emma
shares.

Emma student taught at Animas before she moved to teach at Mountain middle school
for five years. At Mountain she taught science and Math. She is passionate about project-based
learning and forming meaningful connections with her students.

Emma shares her visions for her students and how she would like to help them grow and
prepare for a life outside of school. “Your day is whatever you want it to be”. In Emma’s class
there are many forms of activities and teaching styles varying from notes to scavenger hunts to
small projects. “When I taught middle school, students focused more on minecraft and sports
whereas topics are more serious in highschool”.

This is Emma’s first year teaching high schoolers, she shares, “I feel like there is more
freedom here, you can trust your students to get more done without as much hand holding.
Telling them this is exactly what you need to be doing at this time, but that is also a little scary to
me because are they really doing it?”. Emma is continuing to grow as a teacher and learning
how she can guide her students in the right direction, showing them new possible topics of
interest and expanding their knowledge of our world.
