ATSG INTRODUCTION FORD 5R55E This unit is the first 5 Speed automatic found in domestic vehicles. It is currently found in the RANGER (4x2 and 4x4) trucks and the Aerostar (4x2 and AWD) wagons. This unit is found with the 4 litre engine. This unit is very similar to the 4RS5S5E. Many of the updates in parts in the 5R55E are now found in the 4R55E. built in 1997. EPC pressure contro! solenoid and Torque Converter clutch solenoids are NOT interchangeable. We have listed the updated parts in this unit along with the part numbers. Many of the parts between the 4R and 5R units may look the same BUT are not interchangeable, be careful. The brake shit consists of an electncal solenoid mounted at the base of the steering colurnn. If ignition ky is in the RUN position, tne solenoid continually runs unless the brake is depressed. I1 the brake circuit fuse is blown or the solenoid has intemally shorted, the vehicle will not shift trom the PARK position even ifthe ignition is on and the brake pedal is depressed. The intariock can be temporary ‘overridden by the following: 1. Apply parking brake. 2. Remove the igntion kay. Insert the ignition key and rotate one position clockwise (ignition off. 4. Shitt ne selector lever to neutral. NOTE: If the vehicle Ia shifted Into PARK, the above procedure must be repeated. 5. Start the vehicle, Transmission Control Switch (TCS) The Transmission Contre! Switch (TCS) is a drver-contrlled momentary contact switch mourrted on the ‘end of the transmission range selector ‘ever. When the TCS is activated (TCIL. on), 5th gear operation (overdeve) is cancelled. ‘Transmission Control Indlestor Lamp (TCIL) ‘The Transmission Control Indicator Lamp (TCIL) ts located on the instrument panel or on the end of the transmission range selector lever (model dependart) and is a Visual cue to let ne driver know that the TCS hhas been depressed and Sth gear has been cancelled (TCS onTCIL activated). The TCIL will flash if the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects a concem in certain transmission-related sensors or solenoids TRANSUISSION CONTROL SWITCH (LOCATED ON THE EN? The manuai lever shaft, which is connected 0 a park rod, presses the parking paw into the park gear on the output shat. This locks the output shaft and prevents the vehicle from rating. However, far safety reasons, the parking brake should be applied whenever the vehicle Is parked. ‘While the engine can be started in either P or N position, the ignition key can only be removed in PARK. Reverse Reverse gear allows the vehicle to be operated in a rearward direction, Neutral As in PARK, thar 8 no power anstered through the transmission. When averdive has been canceled by depresung tho Tansmsson Contd Switch (TCS) and acoveong Tranzmesion Conto Incicator Lamp (TCIL), the anamsson wal nt upshit to Sth gear and engine brakig is provisod. 2nd Postion Selaction of the 2 position provides a 3rd gear hold position from a manual upshift or downshift. When the 2 position is selected from a stop, the transmission will startin 3rd gear. This allows for maximum traction on slippery surfaces. Engine braking is provided In the 2 position when the Transmission Control ‘Switch (TCS) is on or otf. 1t Position ‘Tho 1 position provides a 1st gear hold afer an automatic or manual downshit. The transmission is Prevented from downshifting above a specific speed (approximately 48 kirvh (30 mph)) to protect the Powertrain from overspeeding. Engine braking is provided In the manual 1 position when the Transmission Controi Switch (TCS) or (TCIL) is on or of, 8 reduced gear ratio. R (REVERSE) (OVERDRIVE; ATSG Service Information SRSSE | TORQUE CONVERTER ‘The GRSSE uses a four-element torque converter. The converter contains the standard intamal componenis (turbine, impolier, and stator for transfer of power and multiplication of torque. It also utilizes a disc-typa ‘Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) far maximum tuel economy. When applied, the TCC provides a mechanical link between the converter turbine and the engine, allowing for a direct mecranical power transfer from the engine to the transmission. The converter clutch pressure plate Is applied and released by fluid pressure, which Is controlled by the Powertrain Contro! Module (PCM), ‘The PCM contrais the torque converter clutch using a pulse-width modulated TCC solenoid. The torque converter damper is unctional full ime for improved NVH. Finer ‘Al fluid drawn from the pan passas through the fiter. The fitar and its accompanying seals are part of the fluid path to the fuid pump, ‘The fiter also has a bypass section. This allows the fluid, which is vented at the main regulator vaive, to be recirculated to the pump without passing through the fitenng element. Pump ‘The pump provides the fuld pressure required ta charge the torque converter, main control assembly, ‘transmission cooling system, lubrication system and spply devices. ‘The SASSE has a positive displacement gear and crescant-type pump which is driven by the tarque ‘converter hub. Main Control Assembly ‘The main control assembly and related components are part cf the pressure side of the SRSSE hhydraulle system. The main control assembly consists of the solencics, the valve body assembly and the separator piate, All valves Inside tna main contro! assembly are anodized aluminum. This means they cannot be sanded, fled or dressed in any way that may damage the valves’ surface. If he valve have any scratches, burs ‘oF nicks that prevert free mavement, the main control assembly must be replaced. ELECTRONICS Shift scheduling, timing and feel (line pressure), as well a8 Torque Convertor Clutch (TCC) operation in the SRESE are convaled electronically by the Powertrain Controt Module (PCM). {Input signais from various engine sensors (refer to Figures 6 and 7) give the PCM Information about the engine's operating sia. Other inputs ara based on diver demands, such as the accelerator pedal postion, ‘which s monttored by the PCM using the Throttle Postion (TP) sensor. Inputs are also supplied by the tranemission tael. The Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor, the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor. the ‘Overdrive Drum Speed (ODS) sensor and the Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) sensor supply Information to the PCM. Using these input signals the PCM can determine when the tina and conditions are right for a shit or ‘TCC application. The PCM alto determines the line pressure needed to optimize shift feel. To accomplish thia, the PCM controls ax solenoida (outputs): four onvot for upshits, downshifts and coast clutch "application, one for pulse-width modulated control ofthe torque converter clutch and one VFS fur (lectzonie tine pressure control.
