Preventing Injuries Caused by Cold Weather


• Ensure that you wear proper clothing for cold, wet, and windy conditions.
Layer clothing to adjust to changing temperatures. Wear a hat and gloves.

• Use the buddy system: work in pairs so that one worker can recognise
danger signs.

• Drink warm, sweet beverages (sugar water, sports-type drinks) avoid


drinks with caffeine (Coffee, tea, carbonated drinks) and alcohol.

• Remember, workers face increased risks when they take certain


medications, are in poor physical condition, or suffer from illness such as
diabetes, hypertension or cardiovascular disease.

Symptoms of Hypothermia

The most common signs and symptoms of Hypothermia:


Mild hypothermia Moderate to severe hypothermia
• Shivering • Shivering, although as hypothermia
• Dizziness worsens, shivering stops
• Hunger • Clumsiness or lack of coordination
• Nausea • Slurred speech or mumbling
• Faster breathing • Confusion and poor decision-making,
• Trouble speaking such as trying to remove warm clothes
• Slight confusion • Drowsiness or very low energy
• Lack of concern about one's condition
• Progressive loss of consciousness
• Weak pulse
• Slow, shallow breathing
