Course Description: This course will introduce students to basic organization and instrumentation in a
Chemical Pathology Laboratory. Furthermore, it will provide general information about the
biochemical basis of disease, the principles and laboratory diagnosis of some conditions with
biochemical derangements.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this course, students are expected to:

1. Discuss the laboratory methods used in the diagnosis of metabolic diseases in humans
2. Describe the procedure for the establishment of reference values
3. Investigate plasma proteins and the disturbance in water, sodium and potassium balance in human
4. Perform the assays for blood glucose determination

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: (lectures and tutorials -2 hours per session; practicum- 4 hours per
session).
ATTENDANCE/EVALUATION: ____ 30 MCQs for continuous assessment and 70 MCQs for the Exam.
Practical session will make up 10/30 marks for the CA.
