Date of Distribution: 28/11/2023 Name of Faculty: Er. Sunil Kumar Yadav

SUBJECTIVE QUESTIONS BL
Drag and lift, drag on a sphere, aerofoil, Magnus effect.
Q1) Derive the expression of a drag force on a flat plate due to boundary 2
layer.
Q2) Experiments were conducted in a wind tunnel with a wind speed of 50 3
km/hour on a flat plate of size 2 m long and 1 m wide. The density
of air is 1.15 kg/m3. The coefficient of lift and drag are 0.75 and
0.15 respectively. Determine:
(i) the lift force (ii) the drag force
(iii) the resultant force (iv) power exerted by air on the plate
Q3) What is magnus effect? Explain its effect in fluid mechanics. 2
Similarity Laws: geometric, kinematics and dynamic similarity, undistorted and
distorted model studies.
Q4) A 1:15 model of a flying boat is towed though the water. The prototype 3
3
is moving in sea water of density 1024 kg/m at a velocity 20 m/s.
Find the corresponding speed of the model, also determine the
resistance due to wave on model, if the resistance due to waves of
prototype is 600N.
Q5) A ship of 300m long moves in sea water whose density is 1030kg/m3, a 3
1:100 model of this ship is to be tested in wind tunnel the velocity
of air in the wind tunnel around the model is 30m/sec and the
resistance of the model is 60N. Determine the velocity of ship in sea
water and also the resistance of the ship in sea water. The density
of the air is1.24kg/m3. Take kinematic viscosity of sea water and air
as 0.012 stokes and 0.018 stokes respectively.
Dimensional analysis, Buckingham’s Pi theorem.
Q6) The pressure difference Δ p in a pipe of diameter d and length l due 3
to turbulent flow depends on the velocity v, viscosity μ, and density
ρ and roughness k. Using Buckingham pie theorem, obtain expression
for Δ p.
Q7) The efficiency ή of a fan depends on density ρ, dynamic viscosity of 3
the fluid μ, angular velocity diameter d of the rotor and discharge
Q. Express the efficiency in terms of dimensionless parameters.

SUBJECTIVE QUESTIONS BL
Important dimensionless numbers and their significance.
Q8) What are dimensionless numbers? Derive the expression of Reynolds 2
number.
Q9) A pipe of diameter 1.5m is requested to transport an oil of specific 3
gravity .90 and viscosity 3x10-2 poise at the rate of 3000liters /sec.
Test were conducted on a 15 cm diameter pipe using water at 20 degree
Celsius. Find the velocity and rate of flow in the model. Viscosity
of water at 20 degrees Celsius=.01 poise
Q10) A convergent-divergent nozzle is operating under off-design 3
conditions, resulting in the presence of a shock wave in the diverging
portion. A reservoir containing air at 400 kPa and 800 K supplies the
nozzle, whose throat area is 0.2 m2. The upstream Mach number of the
shock is M = 2.44. The area at the exit is 0.7 m2. Find the area at
the location of the shock and the exit temperature.
Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
Q11) What is CFD. Explain the applications of CFD in different field. 2
Q12) An overhead water tank is in the shape of a sphere of 12 m diameter 3
and is supported by a 30 m tall tower of circular section of diameter
2 m. Determine the moment at the base caused by the aerodynamic force
due to cyclonic wind of speed 100 kmph. Assume density of air as 1.205
kg/m3 and kinematic viscosity as 15.06 × 10–6 m2/s.

SUPPLEMENTARY QUESTIONS BL
Drag and lift, drag on a sphere, aerofoil, Magnus effect.
Q1) A high-speed car with m=2000 kg, CD=0.3, and A= 1 m2 deploys a 2m 4
parachute to slowdown from an initial velocity of 100 m/s. Assuming
constant CD, brakes free, and no rolling resistance, calculate the
distance and velocity of the car after 1, 10, 100, and 1000 s. For
air assume, density=1.2 kg/m3, and neglect interference between the
wake of the car and the parachute
Q2) A wind tunnel has a test section 1 m square and 6 m long with air at 4
20°C moving at an average velocity of 30 m/s. It is planned to slant
the walls outward slightly to account for the growing boundary-layer
displacement thickness on the four walls, thus keeping the test-
section velocity constant. At what angle should they be slanted to
keep V constant between x = 2 m and x =4 m?
