It's adventure time again as HUGO and Penelope get swept up in another
superbly animated 2-D VGA extravaganza! This time a murder mystery is afoot
with a couple of fiendish twists and a large helping of humor along the way.
Just look what's in store; a revolving bookcase, a saucy French maid, and
a murderer! HUGO II, WHODUNIT? follows the same look and feel of
HUGO'S HOUSE OF HORRORS but with many more screens and characters. If you
enjoyed the original HUGO adventure, HUGO II is a real treat in store for you!
Other features include save and restore, inventory keeping, on-line help and
the all important boss key.
This software requires an IBM compatible computer with EGA or VGA graphics.
It also requires 330Kb of RAM (not including MSDOS) and 1Mb of disk space. A
hard disk is not essential but highly recommended.
Note that the program must be run from the directory where it resides or the
self-check will fail.

To finish the game early, type either QUIT or EXIT at the prompt.
To move HUGO, use either your arrow keys or the numeric keypad (remember to
turn the Num-Lock off). If using the keypad, diagonal movement is possible.
To stop HUGO simply type the same cursor key (or numeric keypad key) again.
Remember there is no need to hold down the button for HUGO to keep moving.
Use simple English to instruct HUGO to perform an action. For example "look
around" or "look at door" to look at things. To pick something up try "pick
up the gun" or "get gun" or "take gun" etc. Many synonyms are allowed but if
HUGO doesn't seem to understand, try re-phrasing your command.
Certain actions carry a bonus score when carried out, as does picking up
useful objects. When you have successfully completed the game, your score
should match the maximum score shown on the status line at the top of the
screen.
F2 .......... TURNS SOUND ON OR OFF. Note that sound does not play
continuously. The status of this button is shown in the
status line at the top of the screen.
F4 .......... SAVES A GAME. If you have to leave the game early but wish to
save your current position, use this feature by pressing F4.
Note that you may also type "SAVE" instead of pressing F4.
You will see a text box appear with eight rows of dotted lines
and an arrow pointing to the first. These are empty "slots"
which allow you to save up to eight versions of the game.
Press return and the arrow will flash by the first slot,
prompting you to enter a short description of your current
game, e.g. "In the Kitchen", press return to save the game and
then either continue or leave the game by typing QUIT or EXIT.
When you return to run the game again, use the F5 button to
restore it. You may re-use any slot and either retain the
same description or type another.
An important phrase is "look" when you first enter a room or scene. As well
as telling you where you are, this can give you clues as to what is happening
or what you should be doing in the game.
Also very important are "look at" and "get" or "take" something. You can also
try to "look in" or "look inside" or "drop" an object.
There is a whole range of other actions which may involve an object, e.g. "get
book", "talk to bird" or may not, e.g. "listen" or "jump". There are even a
few occasions where more than one object is involved, e.g. do something with
something. Although many phrases are recognized, if you try one that seems
like it should work but doesn't, try rephrasing the command. It is also
possible that you are not spelling something correctly.
Be warned that there are also several puzzles that do not require any phrases
at all but are simply a matter of moving our HERO in the right manner.
A lot of people have had trouble with the colored buttons in the gardener's
shed. To get rid of the gardener, hang around in the shed for a minute or
two for a juicy clue. To save you some time figuring out the buttons, you
need to visit the killer bees and walk back to the shed before the buttons
will work for you. The reason is because you cannot tell whether you are
switching something on or off remotely until you see what state it is in.
Another sticking point is near the end of the game where you have to guess
who the murderer is. In this phase of the game there are five clues as to
the murderer's identity. When you have obtained all five clues, police
officer Higgins will appear and lead you into the living room where the
final accusation takes place with everyone present.
Finally, remember to save your game frequently and whenever you are about to
enter a new screen or do something which may be dangerous. Then it is an
easy matter to restore and try something else if you get killed.
Other features include save and restore, inventory keeping, on-line help
and the all important boss key.
3. HUGO III, JUNGLE OF DOOM! ..... the third and final episode of this hugely
popular trilogy of colorful 2-D animated VGA adventure games. Featuring
spectacular graphics, a new "turbo" button and built-in hints, HUGO III
is sure to be another best-seller. Will HUGO outwit the evil witch-doctor,
find the mysterious Pool of Life and finally defeat his arch-enemy the old
man? The answer is yes, and much more besides!
Other features include save and restore, inventory keeping, on-line help
and the all important boss key.
