The study is designed to identify weaknesses in marine instructors’

teaching strategies, their leadership and evaluation tools used in teaching to

propose an enhanced training program to further strengthen the training of

marines in the Philippine Marine Corps. The study sought to determine the

teaching performance of marine instructors as assessed by course director,

and/or directorate, the instructor themselves and the students, their

leadership effectiveness as marine instructors in terms of Marine leadership

indicators, their extent of use of instructional evaluation tools, and the

academic performance of marine students. Inferential statistics such as t-test

for two independent groups were used to determine significant differences

between student and teacher assessments on leadership and Pearson’s r

was used to determine if students’ academic performance was influenced by

teacher effectiveness in teaching ad leadership and the use of traditional and

authentic assessments. The study made use of a descriptive-correlational

research design and took into consideration six (6) Course Directors and

Members of Directorate, three (3) marine instructors and 26 marine trainees

or students from multiple barrack training grounds in the Philippines. The

study made use of instruments from the Instructor Performance Evaluation

Result for the School Year 2018-2019 which can be accessed in the Marine

Corps Training Center and its own self-made survey instrument. The most

salient findings of this study are outlined as follows: (1) marine instructors’

teaching performance is in the outstanding level; (2) The leadership

effectiveness of marine instructors as assessed by instructors themselves

and students in terms of morale, discipline, esprit-de-corps and proficiency is

outstanding. Students assessed teacher leadership effectiveness similarly

except on esprit-de-corps and proficiency. Significant differences on the

assessment of marine instructors and students were found when it comes to

marine instructors’ ‘leadership effectiveness in terms of morale, discipline and

proficiency. Instructional evaluation tools used by marine instructors in terms

of traditional tests are used to a moderate extent while for authentic

assessment high extent. The academic performance of marine students is in

the low range of outstanding levels. Significant relationships were found

between variables pertaining to instructor and academic performance of

students. Conclusions and recommendations were given in line with the

findings of this study.
