Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica

Notes
As of 2000, there were 2,463 named "strains" (serovars) of Salmonella
Revised schemes for nomenclature are currently under consideration, and will probably restrict these taxa to two species
1 2
(Salmonella enterica, and Salmonella bongori).
S. enterica will be further divided into six subspecies (enterica, salamae, arizonae, diarizonae, houtenae and indica).
This first subspecies of Salmonella (Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica) incorporates the majority of taxa commonly
associated with gastroenteritis; ie, serotypes enteritidis (Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar enteritidis),
typhimurium, infantis, hadar, choleraesuis, etc.
