Music Lesson Plan

Title: Mortimer Instrument Lesson Grade Level: Pre-K

Materials needed: Mortimer by Robert Munsch, shakers, jingle bells, rhythm


sticks, drums

Procedure:
A.S: (L) Have you guys ever had so much fun that your parent or adult has to come
upstairs and tell you to be a little more quiet? Yes? Well, today we are going to be
reading a book about a certain rambunctious little boy named Mortimer.

1. Start by sitting in a circle, making sure each child has a dot to sit on.
2. (L)Begin reading Mortimer all the way through.
a. When you get the part where Mortimer sings “Clang clang rattle bing
bang gonna make my noise all day”, have the students sing it loud and
shake their bodies.
b. Have them also say with you in their deepest voices “Mortimer be
quiet!”.
c. Have them pat their legs when the book goes “thump thump thump
thump”
3. After reading it the first time, hand out either a shaker, jingle bell, rhythm
stick, or a drum to each child.
4. (G)Show the children how to play their instrument and go over the names
5. (L)Go over rules with the instruments
a. Don’t play when it isn't your turn
b. When you arent playing, place your instrument in front of you and put
your hands in your lap
c. Be gentle when playing
6. (L)Ask students to play their instruments loudly.
7. (L) Ask the students to play their instruments softly
8. (G) Go over instructions for the second reading
a. Have the students play their instrument loudly and sing “clang clang
rattle bing bang gonna make my noise all day” when that part of the
book occurs.
b. Pat with the “thump thump thump”
c. Say in a deep voice “Mortimer be quiet!”
9. (G) Check for understanding and go over rules again
10.(G) Read through the book again while having the students play their
instruments on the assigned parts.
Closure: (G) Go over the names of the instruments that they played and if
Mortimer would have had an instrument would he have played it loudly or softly?

Educational Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will have learned . . . how to play
softly and loudly and how to play different instruments as well as their names.
