Introductions/Language Stories

I look forward to getting to know each of you over the next few months. However, this is
a process that takes time. As a starting point, I would like you tell me a bit about yourself.
Write me a letter in which you at least answer the following questions:

Tell me about yourself (where you have lived, your family, interests, etc.)

What do you like to do in your free time? What makes you happy?

How would you describe yourself as a student? Are there any misperceptions you
think teachers have had about you?

What is one thing a teacher has done in the past that helped you be successful?

Is there anything that you think is important for me to know about you right away
(either personally or academically) so that I understand you as a student?

I would like to hear your language story. The following questions are suggestions to get
you started:

What language(s) do you speak?

What language(s) did you grown up hearing?
What language(s) have you studied?
Want language(s) do you want to learn?

What is your relationship with language(s)?

Has it brought you joy, frustration, pride, sadness? Something else?
When has language opened or limited opportunities for you? Made you feel
included or excluded? Been an advantage or disadvantage for you?

What choices have you had around language?

When have you or haven’t you had control over what language to speak?
How has language shaped your relationships with people in your life? Your
family, teachers, friends?

Guidelines:

1. Typed, double-spaced (1-2 pages)

2. Print out and bring to class on Wednesday, January 5th.
