HISTORY OF PAPER MACHE

Paper Mache’ is a French word meaning “mashed paper” that originally begun in China during the
second century AD who were inventor of paper. However, it was French craftsmen who first
discovered its potential making cups, snuffs boxes, imitating stucco and plaster work.

It is a craft that uses recycled paper. Strips of paper are torn then dipped into a glue and water
mixture. A second paper mache’ method uses paper pulp to mould various shapes. Layers of glue
and paper from objects such as figurines, boxes, bowls and masks. An advantage of this craft was
that it was strong yet light weight especially when layered with a coat of varnish. It was used to
make soldiers helmets.

Overtime, with the spread of trade, Paper Mache’ spread to areas around the world such as
Samarkand and Morocco, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Persia and India.

In 1973, a church in Norway was built with Paper Mache’ and stood for 37 years. Mass production
lasted about one hundred years in Europe until its decline in 1870
