Introduction

In engineering practice we come across a number of objects

containing plane curves such as ellipses, parabolas, Hyperbolas etc.
the curve which is obtained by cutting a right circular cone with the
help of a plane in different positions relative to the axis is called a
cone section. This topic deals with a few common methods of
constructions of the conic section and the field of their applications.

Ellipse

When the cutting plane is inclined to the axis and cut all the

generators of the cone. The section is an ellipse. The inclination of

cutting plane for an ellipse must be greater than half of the apex.

Arc of circle

An ellipse can also be defined as the locus of a point moving in a

plane in such a way that at any instant the sum of its distances from

the two fixed points, known as foci, is always a constant equal to the

length of the major axis of the ellipse.

Cont..

F and F ′ are the two foci and AB is the major axis of the ellipse. For

P1, P2 and so on, the points on the curve,

P1F1+P1F ′=P2F1+P2F ′= . . . =AB.

CD is the minor axis.

The major and the minor axes bisect each other perpendicularly
