Please follow the instructions carefully:

1. Write you answers in a Word file and upload the file before the due date on
Blackboard.
2. Write your name and registration ID on the first page of your Word file.
3. Use 12 pt. font size and Times New Roman font style along with 1-inch page margins.
4. Follow the requirements of the word limit and the marking criteria while writing your
answers.
5. You can give your answers in hand written form if you are facing any difficulty in type-
written form.
6. If you are giving hand written answers then you must use A4 paper sheet with sufficient
margin on left and right side.
7. After completing the paper, you are required to make its viewable Snap Shot (preferably
Scan) and paste them on a word file.
8. Please make sure that your hand written file is sufficiently visible and readable. You must
avoid any blur or dull pictures. It is recommended to use black color pen to write your
answers. Don’t use pencil at all.
9. Strictly follow the sequence of the questions.
10. Provide relevant, original and conceptual answers, as this exam aims to test your ability
to examine, explain, modify or develop concepts discussed during the course.

11. Do not copy answers from the internet or other sources. The plagiarism of your answers
may be checked through Turnitin.
12. Recheck your answers before the submission on Blackboard to correct any content or
language related errors.
13. Double check your word file before uploading it on Blackboard to ensure that you have
uploaded the correct file with your answers.
14. Answer scripts can be uploaded on Blackboard any time before its deadline.
Therefore, do not wait for the last hour to avoid any unforeseen problems.
15. Submission of answer copy will be considered acceptable through Blackboard only.
Therefore, do not submit your document through email or any other medium.

Question No. 1: Marks [3+2 = 5]

Part – A:
A ball is dropped from the roof of a building which is 256 feet high. The height of the ball is
described by the function
2
h=−16 t +256
Where h equals the height in feet and t equals time measured in seconds from when the ball was
dropped. Apply Bisection Method to approximate the time t the ball will take to reach ground.
Consider that the time will be in between 1 - 8 seconds. Keep tolerance level up to 1x10-3

Part – B:

A major bank offers a credit card which can be used domestically and internationally. Data
gathered over time indicate that the collection percentage for credit issued in any month is an
exponential function of the time since the credit was issued. Specifically, the function
approximating this relationship is
P=f ( t ) =0.92(1−e−0.10 t )
Where P equals the percentage of accounts receivable collected t months after the credit is
granted. Use Newton-Raphson method to approximate that after how many months the
collected amount will reach 16.676 %. Consider t 0=0 , and solve till tolerance level reaches
less than 1x10-5
.
Question No. 2: Marks [5]

Find all the possible roots of the function f ( x )=x 3 +x−1 , by using Fixed Point Iteration
method. Consider initial guess of x 0=1 and keep tolerance level up to 1x10-3. Also find the
respective errors.

Question No. 3: Marks [5]

You are working for a firm that makes floats for water tanks. The floating ball has a specific
gravity of 0.5 and has a radius of 6.5 cm. You are asked to find the depth to which the ball is
submerged when floating in water.
The equation that gives the depth x in meters to which the ball is submerged under water is given
by;
e x −8 x 2=0
Apply Regula - Falsi method to approximate the roots of equations to find the depth x to which
the ball is submerged under water. Consider the root that lies between 0 and 1, while keeping the
tolerance up to 1x10-4.

Question No. 4: Marks [5]
The fourth degree polynomial
4 3 2
230 x +18 x +9 x −221 x−9
has 2 real roots, one in [-1,0] and the other in [0,1]. Use Secant method to approximate both the
roots within tolerance level of 1x10-6.

Question No. 5: Marks [2+3 =

Part – A:
A Plant Manager supervises the production of three types of components. Three kinds of material
metal, plastic, and rubber are required for production. The amounts needed to produce each
component are

Metal Plastic Rubber

Component
(gm/component) (gm/component) (gm/component)
A 12 4 14
B 10 6 16
C 8 3 28
Table 1
If totals of 56, 25, and 84 gm of metal, plastic, and rubber, respectively, are available each day,
use Jacobi’s method to evaluate how many components can be produced per day? Solve for 5
Iterations and conclude if the equations representing the aforementioned data are convergent or
divergent.

Part – B:
Solve the following system of Multivariable Equations using Gauss Seidel Method.
4 x −2 y −z=3
−2 x +6 y + z=9
−x+ y+ 7 z =−6
Perform 8 iterations, also calculate respective errors for each iteration.

Good Luck!
