SMART CONCRETE
SMART CONCRETE
Concrete containing self-sensing structural materials in it is a smart concrete.
Smart Concrete is obtained from composites of concrete and carbon NanoTube.
Under applied deformations, this smart concrete senses the variations in the
properties of the concrete.
In large Reinforced Concrete members, smart concrete strain members are
inserted.
APPLICATIONS CHARACTERISTICS

SMART CONCRETE
Smart concretes and structures are intelligent systems that have
properties different from normal concrete, such as self-sensing and
self-healing properties, or have the ability to react upon an external
stimulus, such as stress and temperature
Short carbon fibers are added to the concrete using a conventional
concrete mixer.
The sensing ability is not due to the attachment i.e.., the sensing
ability of smart concrete are based on the change of electrical
resistance.
Concrete that is itself a sensor of strain or stress.

SELF SENSING CONCRETE PRODUCED BY

1.SHORT CARBON FIBRE 2.CNT'S-Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)
-It contain short carbon fibres typically 5 mm in length . - seamless tubular structures.
Fibre content is 0.2 vol. % of cement . The diameters of CNTs are in the range of 1~20 nm
Silica fume content is 15% by weight of cement . The lengths are in the range of 0.2~5 μm.
Methylcellulose content is 0.4% by weight of cement.

SELF HEALING CONCRETE:
Self-healing concrete is defined as the ability of concrete to repair its cracks
autogenously or autonomously, while cracks in concrete are a common phenomenon
due to their relatively low tensile strength, it is also called self-repairing concrete.
Often known as “Bio Concrete” or “Bacterial Concrete”
ADVANTAGE
It can last decades or centuries.
decreases concrete maintenance.
Improved in compressive strength of concrete.
DISADVANTAGE
cost.
Not many contractors know how to use this
product yet.
APPLICATIONS
in the case of roads to reduce traffic jams.
oil and gas industries
where buildings undergo freezing and thawing.
works, dams that are directly in contact with water.
tunnel-linings, structural basement walls, highways,
bridges, concrete floors, and marine structures.
PREVIOUS CONCRETE
Pervious concrete can be defined as an open graded or “no-fines” concrete that allows rain water to
percolate through to the underlying sub-base . The principal ingredients are quite similar to conventional
concrete: aggregate, Portland cement, admixtures, fine aggregate (optional), and water.
ADVANTAGE:
It reduces stormwater runoff replenishes water tables and
aquifers.
It eliminate detention ponds that are costly for stormwater
management practices
It minimizes flash flooding and standing water.
Skidding is lowered.

APPLICATION -
Residential roads, streets, and driveways.
Low-volume pavements.
Sideways and avenues.
Parking area.
Tennis Court
In Well linings.
Swimming pool decks
SELF COMPACTING CONCRETE:
Self-compacting concrete, also known as self-consolidating concrete, is characterized by its high fluidity. It
spreads into concrete formwork with no need for vibration equipment. This non-segregating concrete is
distributed by its own weight, while maintaining the properties of regular concrete, such as durability and
strength.

POLYMER CONCRETE:
An ACI Standard, polymer concrete is, “the concrete in which an organic polymer serves as the binder”. In
simpler words, polymer concrete is a complex material where the aggregate is bound together in a matrix with
a polymer binder mixed in it. It reduces porosity and increases the strength of concrete.

Good Adhesion Lightweight
MATERIALS
The most commonly used resins for polymer concrete :
Unsaturated Polyester Resin
Furan Resins
Acrylics and Styrene-Acrylics
Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA)
Methanol
APPLICATIONS
Prestressed concrete
Nuclear power plants
Marine works
WATERPROOF CONCRETE:
Waterproof concrete is both damp-proof and watertight – this means that not only is soil moisture prevented
from getting through to the concrete, but liquid water cannot penetrate it either.
Waterproofing protects structure and the assets within it against damaging moisture, humidity, and floods.

TRANSPARENT CONCRETE
The transparent concrete mainly focuses on transparency and
its main objectives are self monitoring , environmental
protection & energy saving.
There are two basic materials used for making transparent
concrete, one is from construction field and another from
sensing field.
• Concrete
• Optical fibres
