CONSERVATION

E C O S Y S T E M C O N S E R V A T I O N
Objectives
1. Define conservation
2. Importance of conservation
3. Enumerate and describe types of conservation
4. Describe different threats
5. Enumerate and describe conservation strategies
6. Differentiate ecological conservation and biological conservation
Teaching-Learning Process

A. Topic
CONSERVATION

WHAT IS
CONSERVATION?
Conservation is the management of human
use of natural resources to ensure that they
are available for future generations and that
ecosystems are protected.
CONSERVATION

WHY IS CONSERVATION
IMPORTANT?
Ecosystems provides us with essential services

Ecosystems are important for the health of our

planet

Ecosystem are a source of beauty and wonder

CONSERVATION

TYPES OF
CONSERVATION
In situ conservation - In situ conservation is the
protection of ecosystems in their natural habitat.
This can be done through the establishment of
protected areas such as national parks and wildlife
sanctuaries.
Ex situ conservation: Ex situ conservation is the
protection of ecosystems outside of their natural
habitat. This can be done through the
establishment of botanical gardens, arboreta, and
seed banks.
CONSERVATION

THREATS TO
ECOSYSTEMS
Habitat loss: Habitat loss is the biggest threat to
ecosystems. It is caused by human activities such
as deforestation, agriculture, and urbanization.

Climate change: Climate change is a major threat

to ecosystems. It is causing changes in
temperature, precipitation patterns, and sea
levels. These changes can make it difficult for
ecosystems to survive and adapt.
CONSERVATION

THREATS TO
ECOSYSTEMS
Overexploitation: Overexploitation is the
harvesting of natural resources at a rate that is
faster than they can be replenished. This can
lead to the degradation or even destruction of
ecosystems.
Invasive species: Invasive species are plants
and animals that are introduced to a new
environment where they have no natural
predators or competitors. They can quickly
spread and displace native species, disrupting
the balance of ecosystems.
CONSERVATION

CONSERVATION
STRATEGIES
Protecting habitats: One of the most important
conservation strategies is to protect habitats.
This can be done through the establishment of
protected areas, such as national parks and
wildlife sanctuaries.

Managing resources sustainably: Another

important conservation strategy is to manage
resources sustainably. This means using Amazon Rainforest
resources at a rate that does not exceed their
ability to be replenished.
CONSERVATION

CONSERVATION
STRATEGIES
Restoring habitats: It is also important to
restore habitats that have been degraded or
destroyed. This can be done through tree
planting, wetland restoration, and other
activities.

Educating the public: Educating the public

about the importance of conservation is also
essential. This can help to reduce the threats to
ecosystems and promote sustainable
practices.
CONSERVATION

ECOLOGICAL
CONSERVATION
Conservation ecology is the branch of ecology
and evolutionary biology that deals with the
preservation and management of biodiversity
and natural resources. It is a discipline that is
emerging rapidly as a result of the accelerating
deterioration of natural systems and the
worldwide epidemic of species extinctions. Its
goal is to find ways to conserve species,
habitats, landscapes, and ecosystems as
quickly, as efficiently, and as economically as
possible
CONSERVATION

BIOLOGICAL
CONSERVATION
Conservation biology is an applied science that
focuses on protecting the Earth’s biodiversity
and maintaining natural ecosystems.
Conservation biology requires a multifaceted
approach that covers all areas of the
environment: preserving current ecosystems,
identifying reasons behind any decomposition
and restoring ideal conditions.
B. ACTIVITIES
Activity 1: True or False
Type “True” in the chat box if the statement is
true . if not then type “False”

Activity 2: Enumerate Threats to Ecosystem

Activity 3: Let’s Think!
Give another examples of strategies that we
can use to conserve our ecosystem
