ASSIGNMENT 6 (Observing a student): Discretely observe one student in your assigned classroom

during an extended period of direct instruction.

Detail what was going on in the environment, and what you observed the student doing while the lesson
was being given. Make sure to document ALL behavior in relationship to what was being presented by
the classroom teacher. Please describe the setting, the lesson that was given, if the student was on task
and engaged in the lesson, and what you uncovered about putting yourself in a lesson from the student’s
point of view. >>>

I observed a student that was reserved but attentive during lessons, but always participated in
shoulder partner discussions. He raised his hand a fair amount of times during my two day
observation. When allowed to collaborate with his shoulder partner, I could tell he was very
engaged and enjoyed speaking to other students. He spoke to his shoulder partner as well as
his peers behind him. When allowed to move around the classroom to collaborate with other
students, he mostly stayed at his desk to complete his assignment by himself. What I
uncovered was that Garcia teaches well, and makes sure the majority of students understand
the lessons being taught.
