METHOD STATEMENT: OPEN CUT

1) Introduction
The open cut trench method involves excavating down to and exposing the existing
pipe so that it can be repaired or replaced and then backfilled.
The detail method and length of road crossing should be subjected to construction
drawing.
2) Scope

Existing underground piping crossing the road (Refer Attached Drawing).

3) Tools/Machinery

 Excavator
 Road Cutting Machine
 Dump Truck
 Sludge Pump
 Generator set
 Watering Cart

4) Safety, Health & Environment

 Workers will be supplied with necessary PPE.

 Sufficient warning tape and barrier shall be installed on working site.
 Visible direction and warning sign shall be provided away from excavation point.
Battery or genset powered lights should be deployed during the hours of
darkness around barricades.
 Flagmen will be on site to guide the traffic flow during the process.
 During the process of soil disposal, should arrange some specially-assigned
person to clean the soil falling on the road.
 Watering the transportation road continuously to avoid raise dust.

5) Traffic Management

 According to the actual situation, Contractor will close one side road to ensure
vehicle and people safety will go smoothly.
 Set signboard and flagmen to guide vehicle to pass through the point. A speed
limit was set and a flagmen was assigned at the exit point to prevent a traffic jam
or accident.
 Contractor HSE representative will monitor the compliance of this plan and to
take correct actions where observed.
6) Procedure

a. Preparation work
To study all relevant drawings, depth of crossing, check whether equipment
and materials for construction are delivered at site.

Check the site condition, whether any other facilities was buried near the
crossing location. If it has, the facilities shall be exposed by hand tools firstly.
Any trial holes excavated in roads or adjacent verges to locate services or
apparatus will be properly protected by appropriate traffic signs and barriers.

b. Surveying work
Formal layout survey of the road crossing will be undertaken noting centre
line and crossing limits by Contractor.

The centreline will be established along the crossing central axis according to
the control stakes and centreline stakes arranged by pre-construction survey.

c. Road excavation
Contractor shall mark out the boundary line of the trench according to the
crossing axis and the design width of the trench.

Contractor shall use cutting machine to cut the two sides of section road, and
then make small cuts on the road surface with excavator to break the
adhesion of the road.

d. Pipeline lower-in and backfill

After completion of ditching, Contractor shall level off the ditch bottom
according to the design requirement.

Then, the pipeline shall be lowered in the trench to its proper position, sand
bedding materials as per design specification will be installed to specified
minimum depth, below and above pipeline.

Pipes will be installed by soft slings or by methods that does not incur surface
damage. On final placement, all exterior surfaces of the pipes will be tested
to verify no damages where such has occurred all repairs will be undertaken
and re-tested prior to any backfilling.

The sub-base and base course layer for open cut crossing road with concrete
slab shall be reinstated as per existing and these layer shall be compacted,
tested and witnessed by client/consultant.
If the soil under trench is over excavated, the over excavated shall be
backfilled and compacted.

e. Road restoration
Road restoration will be undertaken as per the original road base structures
and surfacing referenced in design specification or as per existing road
surface.

Contractor will compile all documentation necessary for perusal and

handover to clients/consultant.
