Course Outline: Language structure
COURSE CONTENT
The course consists of three components; grammar, pronunciation and language didactics.
You will therefore meet several teachers during this course. Under each section of the
compendium you will find more detailed information about the three different parts of the
course (also see the “kursplan” for course goals).
Attendance
All seminars are obligatory.
If you miss more than two grammar seminars you will need to do a make-up
assignment.
If you miss a didactics seminar you will need to do a make-up assignment.
The lectures in grammar and pronunciation are not obligatory but we strongly
encourage you to attend them.
The pronunciation lab sessions are not obligatory but we strongly encourage you to
attend them.

THE GRAMMAR COMPONENT
The grammar component will take up the major part of the lectures and seminars, and we
will focus on the basic grammar structures of English and compare these to Swedish. The
grammar component consists of eight 45-minute lectures and nine seminars. The first
seminar is only 45 minutes long and the rest are 90 minutes. When you come to the lectures
you should have read the relevant sections in the grammar book (Modern Engelsk
Grammatik) since that will make it easier for you to follow the lectures. It is also important
that you work actively with the assignments to prepare for the seminars.
EXAMINATION
The final examination will consist of a written grammar test which will also contain a short
pronunciation section (U/G/VG).
Check your online schedule for the times of your group seminars.
4
THE PRONUNCIATION COMPONENT
This part of the language structure course deals with English pronunciation and the English
sound system. As future language teachers, pronunciation is an important part of your
training and will be essential in your future English classrooms. The pronunciation
component will focus on the English speech sounds and sound patterns, and contrasting
these with Swedish sounds. There will also be practical pronunciation exercises in our
language lab.
TEACHING
The teaching consists of three lectures and three language lab sessions. You will also go
through various pronunciation exercises with your seminar leader. It is important that you
get a copy of the coursebook as soon as possible so that you are able to prepare for the first
lecture (see schedule below). After each language lab and seminar, it is also crucial that you
do the self-study exercises in the book (pages 97-126). The recorded exercises on pages on
pages 109-118 can be found on the book’s website under “extramaterial”:
https://www.gleerups.se/40692429-product?category=kurslitteratur/universitet-och-
hogskola/humaniora
5
THE DIDACTICS COMPONENT
The seminars in didactics are part of the course Language Structure. You are expected to
complete two individual assignments and one assignment in pairs. You are also expected to
work together and participate actively in class.
The final grade of the didactics component, which will be Pass (G) or Fail (U), will be based
on the following components:
Assignment 1 (pair)
Assignment 2 (individual)
Final Assignment (individual)
You may be asked to revise work for reasons of content and/or language.
Demonstrate the ability to execute an activity with an English structure for young learners individually.
Demonstrate the ability to present assignments and to critically examine fellow students’ assignments.
Read the course literature and come well-prepared to the seminars with reflections on the assigned
passages of the course literature.

SCHEDULE
Please see your Timedit schedule for your group’s exact dates and times.
It is a good idea to collect material such as links and lists and plans of activities and put them
on your personal website (“Din digitala presentationsyta”). We suggest they could be put in
7
an area which you call The English Corner, and could be the start of a resource area for your
future work as a primary school teacher of English.
First: Read the text: Browder, D. M., & Roberts, M. L. (1993). Guidelines for Flash Card
Instruction. Journal of Behavioral Education, 3(3), 235–245.
http://www.jstor.org/stable/41824038
Available here: https://www.jstor.org/stable/41824038?pq-origsite=summon?pq-
origsite=summon
Second: Watch the videos “Flash cards – sight words” and the 3 “Read aloud” videos on
Studium. Think about the following questions which we will discuss in the seminar:
Flash cards:
1. What methods have you seen used for flash cards?
2. Were there any methods presented that surprised you as being effective?
3. How can you see using flash cards as being effective for teaching English to young
learners?
4. Can you think of additional ways to work with English sight words?
Read aloud videos:
1. What do you think students will learn from the style of reading?
2. Why might you want to focus on different things during read alouds?
3. How much is too much when pointing something out during the reading?
4. How has the teacher engaged the students in the read aloud?
5. What words should be learned after the focus on vocabulary reading?
6. What words should be learned after the sight words reading?
7. What sounds should be learned after the focus on sounds reading?
Third: Bring 2-3 children’s picture books to seminar 1 written in English that you think could
work in the F-3 classroom. You may bring books from home or borrow books from a local
library. We will work with the books during the seminar.
Fourth: Read pages 7-57 in Kidworthy Works and take notes on the following (we will discuss
in class):
• What do you think about using picture books in English?
• Had you considered doing this before?
• The text mentions that students may start to feel self-conscience about speaking in
English at around age 10.
• What can you do to help with this?
• What about in this university classroom? How can we get everyone speaking
in English and participating? Why is it important?
• What does it mean to participate?
• What are the characteristics of a good book for use in the English lessons? – Have
you thought of this for your production storybook presentation?
8
We will do the following in-class activity during seminar 1. To prepare, complete steps 1-4
above:
9
Preparation for Seminar 2
Assignment 1: Instructions
Lesson Plan and Song
Aim: give you practice in creating relevant activities related to a song in English
practice singing a song in English in a manner suitable for young children
give and receive constructive feedback
For this assignment, you will be working in pairs. You are going to plan an English lesson
around a song of your choice. To begin with, choose an appropriate song in English for your
young students. You can find examples of suitable songs in Kidworthy Works but you are free
to use other songs you may know (be prepared to sing this song in a small group).
Write your short lesson plan together. You will want to include the following parts.
Your plan should be approximately 500 words. Remember to include a reference list for any
material you have used.
When you have written your plan, you upload it to Studium before seminar 2.
In class, you will discuss your lesson plan ideas and you will perform your song in small
groups.
10
Preparation for Seminar 3
In this seminar, you will be given student texts to work with.
Sandström pp. 93-107 / Chapter 9 Early Language Learning and Teaching In-Class
Discussion Questions
“Do not be the kind of teacher who depends on your textbook because you are afraid not to
(Sandström, 2013, p. 105)”.
• What are your reflections on this statement?
• What does Sandström encourage instead?
11
Preparation for Seminar 4
For this assignment, you will be working individually. You are going to video record yourself
giving a set of instructions to an imaginary group of children. The instructions can be for a
simple game. You can record yourself using Studio on Studium. You will upload your video to
Studium when it is finished. You will be put in discussion groups before seminar 4 and watch
your group’s videos before the seminar. In seminar 4, you will be in your small groups, and
give constructive feedback on each other’s instructions. When you are giving instructions,
you are free to use whatever visual aids you think are relevant and helpful.
Think about the following:
What are the instructions for? A simple game is best.
What language elements are in focus?
What visual aid(s) will you use to help both you and your students? How does this
aid/do these aids help the students to understand?
Plan carefully what you will say and how you will say it. How do your instructions
progress? What comes first, second, third and so on? What will you repeat?
When you have recorded yourself, upload the assignment to Didactics Section: Assignment 2
on Studium. Watch the other videos in your group before seminar 4.
Deadline: May 17
Before you record yourself, watch the example video on Studium on giving instructions.
As you watch consider the following:
1. What are the instructions for?
2. What language elements are in focus?
3. What visual aid(s) are used? How does this aid/do these aids help the students to
understand?
4. How do the instructions progress? What comes first, second, third and so on? What
is repeated?
Of the activities listed on pages 134-135, which would you like to try with students?
Why?
How are you going to make sure to use what you have learned about teaching young
children English?
What are the most important things to keep in mind when teaching English to young
learners?
12
Final Assignment Instructions
For the final assignment, you are to write a 500-700 word reflection. In the reflection, you
will explain how your ideas for how you will teach English to young learners have developed
over the term. The following questions can help you to get started:
What are your goals as a teacher of English for young learners and how have these
developed over the term?
How will you try to help young learners develop their skills in English and how have
your thoughts on this developed over the term?
How will you use assessment as a tool to help young learners continue to develop
their skills in English and how have your thoughts on this developed over the term?
You are also recommended to use and refer to the course literature from the Production
course: Early Language Learning and Teaching: Pre-A1-A2 as well as other readings/seminars
on the courses.
Upload the assignment to Didactics Section: Final Assignment on Studium. Deadline: May 31
File name: last name_first name_didactics final.doc (jones_sally_didactics final.doc)

WEEK 13
Maurice the motor car had once been the smartest car on the road. His headlamps shone, his
windows sparkled and his paintwork gleamed. Whether it was an outing to the seaside or
picnics in the summer, parties or trips into town in the winter, everyone was always so
pleased to see him. But when he began getting rusty and his seats started to sag, Maurice
was sold to a man who mended motorbikes. He kept his tools on the back seat. Then came
the day when the man bought a new van.
“Grandad will be having you, Maurice” he said. “Your gears creak and your engine wheezes,
but you won’t be going far from now on.”

Every one of these old people was over ninety. They were as shriveled as prunes, and as
bony as skeletons, and throughout the day, until Charlie made his appearance, they huddled
34
together in their one bed, two at either end, with nightcaps on to keep their heads warm,
dozing the time away with nothing to do. But as soon as they heard the door opening, and
heard Charlie’s voice saying, ‘Good evening, Grandpa Joe and Grandma Josephine, and
Grandpa George and Grandma Georgina,’ then all four of them suddenly lit up with smiles of
pleasure – and the talking began. For they loved this little boy. He was the only bright thing
in their lives, and his evening visits were something that they looked forward to all day long.
Often, Charlie’s mother and father came in as well, and stood by the door, listening to the
stories that the old people told; and thus, for perhaps half an hour every night, this room
became a happy place, and the whole family forgot that it was hungry and poor.

sounds, which all seemed to be saying to Pooh, “Don’t listen to Rabbit, listen to me.” So he
got into a comfortable position for not listening to Rabbit, and from time to time he opened
his eyes to say “Ah!” and then closed them again to say “True” and from time to time Rabbit
said, “You see what I mean, Piglet,” very earnestly, and Piglet nodded earnestly to show that
he did.

Identify the word class of the underlined words below:
“Hurry, Elizabeth, you’re late,” said a grim voice. My social studies teacher, Mr. Wallis, was holding
the door open for me. He was my favorite teacher, despite his intimidating sternness.
The homeless woman gave him a little wave, and Mr. Wallis nodded back as the door swung shut
behind us. I thanked him and hurried to my locker, hearing the late bell chime.
The day went downhill from there. Ms. Jones made me play volleyball barefoot when she saw I didn’t
have my sneakers. Then in social studies Mr. Wallis announced a research paper due right after New
Year’s, effectively eliminating the vacation.
My stepsister Hannah called me that evening to ask me to mail her her black lace top. She’d handed
it down to me when she left for college, but with Hannah, gifts rarely stayed given for long.
“Don’t be a little goose. I bet he just put it on there as a test, to see who would be dumb enough to
think fairy tales are history. Hey, I probably still have my term paper from that class. You can use it if
you like. I’ll trade it for—hm—your good headphones.”
I chewed at the end of my pencil—the one the homeless woman had given me—and stared at the
topic I’d circled, wondering whether to follow Hannah’s advice about switching topics.
