The environment plays a significant role in shaping a person's personality, and this can be

observed through various cultural, social, and personal contexts. Let's analyze the three
documents—the painting "The Jury" by Norman Rockwell, the video "Potty-Mouthed
Princesses," and an excerpt from Asta's written by Barbara Vine to explore how these different
environments impact the characters.

2°The jury
 Painted in 1952, "The Jury" reflects the post-World War II era, a time of social change
and growing awareness of civil rights.
 The protagonist here is the young lady. She is in very center of the group of men.
And, everything is made to feel the tension and the pressure, on the woman
shoulders
 The societal norms of gender during the 1950’s may have influenced the personality
of the female character on the jury. Indeed, she seems to resist them and looks pretty
annoyed by the men’s behavior. However, the traditional gender roles in 1950’s may
have expected women to be kind and empathetic, qualities that don’t be reflected in
her expressions
 The formal and serious nature of the environment promote a sense of duty and civic
engagement of the woman. She is certainly a fighter and represents well feminism at
this period

1°Barabara Vine

The environment in this historical setting, London in 1905, plays a crucial role in shaping the
female character's personality.

The narrator experiences a mix of emotions upon her husband's unexpected return, revealing
the impact of the environment on her emotional state. The societal expectations of the time,
the absence of communication (no letters for weeks), the sudden reappearance of the
husband and his awful behavior contribute to the empathy of the narrator

Furthermore, at this time women were not as free and independent as they are nowadays.
The society of the time and its standards did not allow any woman to express her feelings or
even get a divorce. They are subject to their status as wives

3°Mouthed princess
The environment in this video is characterized by the contemporary discourse on feminism
and gender equality. First of all, the video is a commercial for a feminist association which
sells T shirts. The female characters, portrayed as little girls, expressing their frustration about
gender norms and using explicit language (F word). Their purpose is to shock the viewers
with the huge difference between their outfits and their speech. Also, they say that there are
words which are far more shocking to hear (sexual harassment, rape…)

The environment of feminist activism and the fight for equality likely influences the girls'
personalities, promoting a strong sense of rebellion against societal expectations, and a
desire for change. The video suggests that the environment of social movements can shape
individuals' personalities by a sense of activism.

Conclusion
In summary, the societal norms of gender in each document contribute to shaping the
personalities of the female characters. In Rockwell's painting, traditional gender roles may
influence the characters' expressions and interactions. The "Potty-Mouthed Princesses" video
challenges gender norms. In Asta's excerpt, the character's desires and emotions are shaped
by the gender norms of early 20th-century London. These examples illustrate how societal
expectations regarding gender influence the development of characters' personalities in
different contexts and time periods.
