Chapter 4

 Planning visuals after collecting data, clarifying complex or difficult information, and emphasizing
facts.
 Principles of design are lines, emphasis, shape, movement, white space, repetition, proportion,
balance, alignment, and contrast (they are used to add emphasis)
 Conventions for constructing visuals: size, simple graphics, complex graphics, orientation, type,
colour and cross-hatching, background,
 White space creates grouping. It doesn’t just apply to the color white. We use white space to
prevent overcrowding. Breathing space of the page.
 Repetition can bring artistry to our design. It gives the design a sense of rhythm.
 Proportion stops design from feeling heaving lopsided or off. Design should always be
proportionate.
 We can balance our elements symmetrically or asymmetrically. It is how we position objects.
 Unbalanced design can be used for design as well.
 Alignment can help designs feel more balanced, giving structure to designs. Help work look
professional and finished.
